Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I just turned on the refrigerator for the first time tonight. The coils on the back run very very hot. Especially coming out of the left bottom as you face it. I am concerned that it could be a fire hazzard. It is so hot you can not touch it for more than a few seconds.

Tip

Hot door seal, rail, divider strip between refrigerator and freezer.

If the mullion (rail between the fresh food section and the freezer section) on your refrigerator is hotter than normal this tip will help identify and remedy the issue hopefully before it gets to the point of loosing the cooling.

Theory:
Refrigerated surfaces will attract moisture, especially in the warmer more humid areas and times of year. Since the refrigerator and freezer are cold moisture can accumulate near the door from normal use, this moisture can get into the door seals and cause them to not seal properly, mold and otherwise cause a nuisance.

Why Hot:
To keep the moisture from accumulating on this surface the refrigerator manufactures have run part of the hot condenser tubing inside the cabinet close to that rail, under normal running circumstances this rail will be slightly above room temperature and the amount of heat not noticeable. The condenser is the set of coils that are on the back or bottom of the refrigerator and disperse the heat from the unit. If the condenser is very dirty or the fan that keeps the condenser cool is not running then the condenser coils and thus the mullion (rail) gets very hot and overheats. This heat will eventually cause the compressor to work harder and possibly overheat and turn off occasionally to cool itself. This will lead to reduced cooling in the freezer and refrigerator.

Fix: If the coils are under the refrigerator, pull the front grille off of the bottom, check if you feel air coming out, if not then the fan is not running, look for dust and dirt build up on the coils, clean with a brush and vacuum, do not be afraid to get aggressive with the brush. If the fan is not running you will need to go to the back of the refrigerator and unplug the power cord. Remove the back panel off the bottom and you should see the fan. It may have some dust or other debris blocking the fan blade from turning. If so clean that out very good, clean the coils from the back if accessible also. Be sure to put the back panel on as it is there to direct the air flow across the compressor and coils, without that panel the condenser will overheat.

If the fan does not run after cleaning it you will need to replace the fan motor, it is a common part that should be available at most retail appliance part dealers. Just be sure to get your model and serial number before calling.

Old whirlpool freezer door left slightly ajar.light on inside.door won't seal. Rubber on door warm.

FRIDGE COILS or door walls SEEM VERY HOT:

The condenser coils do get hot. They can even be to hot to comfortably touch and this is normal.

The refrigerator should not run constantly but shut off with each defrost cycle.

Running constantly and never cycling off can indicate a cooling problem.

One thing to try is to wait till it has been running a few minutes then open the door and turn your cycling thermostat towards the off position. It should cycle off before getting to the off position on the dial.

If it does not cycle off then it's not getting cold enough to satisfy the thermostat. This is likely the reason the refrigerator runs all the time.

A thermometer in a glass of water can be used to check the temperatures in the refrigerator section.

You can check that all fans are running.

the reason the outer side of the door seal area is getting hot is the compressor is over heating, probably the condenser fan motor to your compressor is bad.
It should be a little warm but not hot. they don't use heaters anymore ( some older models still use heaters) around the doors, instead they use the condenser coils to remove condensation and moister, you might want to check your condenser coils on the bottom or back of fridge to see if they need cleaning
If the condenser coils/condenser fan are all plugged up they need cleaning and/or the condenser may fail or has failed..

The ones that use an electric heater will have an "energy saver" switch that will turn it off.: God is the reason I give you free advice so God is good!

My figidaire freezer fans runs almost all the time

Your problem could be as simple as dirty condenser coils or a burned out condenser fan. These components are on the bottom of the refrigerator and removing a couple of panels should give you access to them. Clean dust and dirt off the coils and check to see if the bottom fan is running when the refrigerator is running.

You'd be surprised how often this simple fix will get you back up and running. Dirty coils make the refrigerant system VERY inefficient, sometimes to the point that the refrigerator has to run almost constantly to acheive the desire temperatures inside the refrigerator.

The panel separating my side by side refrigerator from the freezer is hot - nearly to the point of burning. Kenmore model 10653606202

  1. check if the evaporator fan motor is running (inside the freezer)
  2. Same for the condenser fan motor on the bottom in the back of the fridge
  3. Clean condenser coils underneath or in the back of the fridge
  4. if there is a frost on the back wall in freezer - you've got the defrost problem, check defrost heater, defrost bimetal thermostat, and defrost timer

Magic Chef MCBR415S cabinet get's very HOT!

* Is your compressor motor running all the time ?
* have you checked and cleaned your condenser coils at the back ?
* Is there sufficient airflow around your refrigerator (especially at the back) ?
* Is your refrigerator and freezer cooling properly ?

Sounds like your unit is working overtime - it will usually get hot like that when compressor motor has been running a long time and heat does not dissipate properly at the back - it also gets hot after a defrost cycle - it should NOT be hot at all times. CHeck to make sure your temps are correct to rule out a stuck defrost cycle timer - your refrigerator should not be hotter than 40F and your freezer's temp between 0F-10F, the optimal temp is 0F.

My bottom refrigerator is not cold. The freezer is okay.

Check to make sure the fan in the freezer compartment is working and not blocked. This delivers the cold air to the refrigerator. The fan should run every time the freezer calls for cold.

Water leaking from bottom left freezer/dispenser side

Take the metal back panel off the inside of the freezer, exposing the cooling coils. Below the coils, at the very bottom of the freezer compartment you will find a small drain hole. (Presently covered over with ice) Use hot (not boiling) water and a turkey baster to melt the ice and force hot water into the drain hole until the water runs out the drain hole (and into the defrost drain pan under the refrigerator) on it's own. This should be a Fix-Ya for your refrigerator.
