Question about Dell Dimension 5150 (DIM515MIN) PC Desktop

Can't Play Dvds

I used to be able to play dvds in my computer and now I can't. I got the computer in 2006 and I remember it being finicky for a while. It sometimes wouldn't recognize that there was a dvd in the drive and I'd have to reboot or eject and re-insert dvd. Now it doesn't play it at all. I recently got an new Nvidia card (geforce 8600 GT) and I thought it was because my power supply wasn't keeping up with it, so I also got a new 550W power supply but it still doesn't work. If I used Windows Media Player, or Media Center it'll actually go to the BOSD screen as a "stop" error and it'll blame the driver: nv4_disp.dll, but I'm thinking the dvd player is just shot. The dvd player will recognize and play PC DVDs like Battlefront II, and recently I was able to get to the menu of the dvd: "Finding Nemo" (I was trying a lot of different dvds trying to get it to work.) but when clicked play on the menu it just stayed on the FBI WARNING screen until I ejected it. I read in another article here that a person had the same problem and just updated the decoder, but I don't know how to do that, or if it'll work. I went to dell support and reinstalled my driver for the drive but it still doesn't play dvds. My dvd drive is: HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4134B. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No I haven't tried that yet. I'll go get a DVD Cleaner and see if that works and post my status once I do that. Any recommended DVD Cleaner brands, etc?

I used the DVD drive Cleaner and it still doesn't work; still has a hard time recognizing discs from time to time, and can't play dvds. Thanks for the suggestion but I need a new solution :(

Wow, my bad I was using an old version of Power DVD to play the dvd (thinking that out of most programs Power DVD would be the last to fail) and I used the freeware KMPlayer to play the DVD ( a program that I hadn't tried yet since I used the DVD drive cleaner. IT WORKS. I'm ecstatic. I just hope that the stock dvd drive doesn't malfunction for a while now. You have my gratitude *bow*. Thanks man.

there is a compatibility problem here, there are small difference's that cause this problem it is due to the way the information is encoded on the disk, the there are some players like PHILLIPS that will play anything, others like COBY are very finicky, my best suggestion is buy or borrow another player.

Cannot play dvds as they do not matcth the local code ?

This sounds like the DVDs are from outside the UK. The UK uses Region2 dvds and the USA and others use Region1. It is possible to get dvd players that play both or use your computer to play them. It should say on the disc or box what Region it is.

Samsung DVD-V$357 recorded dvds won't play on other machines

Did you finalize the disk? If not, this should solve your problem. When the disk is finalized you should be able to play it on your computer if you can play other DVDs on it. Some other DVD players can only play specific disks (i.e. DVD-R, DVD+R). This may be another problem.
