Hi, Malcolm.

Boot your system to Safe Mode (press F8 repeatedly).

Login as Administrator (no password).

From the Control Panel, click on Printers & Faxes.

Right click on the Printer and select Properties. In the Advanced tab, tell it to Print Direct to Printer instead of using the Spooler..

It's a problem often seen on XP Home where a Symantec product (like Norton A/V) is installed.

Yes the problem is with your printer port setting, to view or to correct the printer port setting,
- go to CONTROL PANEL
- click or open Printer or Faxes
- right click your Lexmark printer and click properties
- a menu will appear, choose or click PORT tab
- at the Port tab listing, choose USB port and click ok after choosing the right port.

then you should be able to print properly after the right configuration.

    Try to disconnect the printer from your computer. Reboot your computer. Unplug and replug your printer into the power outlet. When the printer turns on, reconnect it to your computer. Doing this usually fixes minor communication issues. Check and try to print again.

    1. FIRST TRY TO CANCEL ALL THE PENDING DOCUMENTS WHICH YOU HAVE GIVEN BEFORE THEN TRY TO PRINT IF THIS DOES NOT WORK THEN TRY OTHER OPTION GIVEN BELOW.
    2. CHANGE THE USB WIRE (THE CONNECTION BETWEEN PRINTER AND YOUR PC )IF IT IS TOO OLD.
    3. THERE MAY BE THE PROBLEM WITH USB DRIVERS IN UR PC .
    4. TO RECTIFY --- RIGHT CLICK THE MY COMPUTER ICON
    5. CLICK PROPERTIES AND THEN CLICK HARDWARE N GO TO DEVICE MANAGER
    6. UNINSTALL ALL USB PORTS AND THEN SCAN FOR HARD WARE CHANGES
    7. UR PC WILL DETECT UR PRINTER N ASK FOR PRINTER DRIVERS
    8. RELOAD DRIVERS N UR PC WILL COMMNICATE WITH UR PRINTER.

    I am getting an error message saying Incorrect port detected. The printer is designed to work with USB cables only. The current software setting is not set to USB port. In my printer properties dialog


    Do you hear the connect/disconnect sounds when you plug the USB cable into your computer? If you do not, then the system is not recognizing the printer USB port.

    Here is what I would do:
    1. In the Devices and Printers section of the control panel, right-click on the printer icon, and select printer properties, then select the Ports Tab. Delete any ports connections for the printer. There could be several for the same printer.
    2. Uninstall all Lexmark drivers.
    3. Make sure that the printer does not show up in the Devices and printers under control panel. If the printer still shows up, remove the device by right-clicking on the icon, and select Remove device.
    4. Reboot the computer.
    5. Re-install the printer software. The software should detect the printer on the USB port.

    Incorrect port detected on 2600


    It could be that the port for the printer in the Control Panel is not configured correctly. You may refer to this article on No Communications Error When Trying to Print or Scan. If that doesn't help, I would suggest you uninstall the Lexmark software. Download the updated Lexmark X2600 driver (Windows only) from the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/aNGYmW. Select your operating system to download the driver. Thanks.

    Lexmark X 4550 scans ok but when i try to print, "incorrect port detected" comes up as a fault, i have it all connected ok and in a usb port. can anyone help please.


    look under control panel ,printers and faxs, right mouse click on your printer displayed in the list , then from the list, select properties . Next from the tabs on top , select ports, from the ports list select the usb connection on the list or if wireless you should have a lexmark connection port showing as well. Its just you havent got the correct port selected.Dave

    Installing like this Lexmark are Plug in Play, Windows automatically detected such devices connected on it. If not then try to use another USB Connector to see which is the problem occur or might be your printer too...

    According to Features and Specs on Lexmarks website, this is a All in One? i.e Fax, Printer, Scan & Copy? also it's a Network type?

    If so have you chosen the correct settings via the Printers Dispay and Control Panel? ...... I assume you have and everythinh in Device manager looks good, i.e no Yellow and or Red Icons over anything listed there, especially USB....correct?

    If your Vista is the 32 Bit then the driver file should be: cjb5000enOSS.exe (87.7MB)
    If Windows Vista x63 then it will be: cjq5000enOSS.exe (132.76MB)

    Try reinstalling the drivers for your printer. You should have a disk that came with the printer. If you don't then you will have to search the Dell website for the drivers. Once you have found them, reinstall them and see how that works out.
