Kenmore Elite Heavy Duty Washer

At two years old my Kenmore washer spin cycle went haywire. I tried balancing it many times, but nothing helped. It made a horrible noise when spinning. Now the washer is three years old and the wash cycle has gone haywire. It makes a sound like ball bearings wearing against each other. I have been a life-long buyer of Kenmore appliances, but I will not buy another since they are all made in China and they have no quality controlled products. What washer would you recommend I buy if I want some quality?

Just found this great site. Our Kenmore Elite has recently begun to shake violently during spin cycles. It also makes a horrific noise that sounds like it is coming from the drum. could it just be out of balance? Or possibly a shock problem ? If either, what is the fix? The washer & dryer are only 3 yrs. old with use of a 2 person family. Thanks, BBE

    Re: First post:

I had a repair man come out to fix my washer and all it was, was a loose screw that held the motor bracket. After the screw came loose the washer made horrible noises and then the motor fell out and hit the floor. The repairman reattched the bracket and motor, and after that it worked fine. Cost $175 for a loose screw.

I was told by 3 technicians that this is a common problem with these Kenmore front loaders and it is the bearings. The are shot and this is a huge problem with these machines. There is nothing to do but replace the whole internal assembly for about $800. All 3 technicians told me to bring the machine to the gutter and go buy a new one.

With Sears not willing to help me out with this I just might go buy another Kenmore product.

I was told there is no option other than replacing the internal assembly for about $800.

3 technicians suggested I bring the unit to the gutter and go buy a new one.

I called Sears corporate offices and they are not willing to do anything for me.
I will never buy another Sears product.

This is how my problem started out. I did everything the book said to do about balancing and nothing worked. It was caused by the loose bracket around the motor. Check those bracket screws and see if they are in tight. If not, then make sure everything else is tight while you are in there. If you don't see any obvious problem then you may have to call a repairman.

Whirlpool is still made in USA, I think. Avoid electronic timers and geegaws you don't need.

Usually, the spin cycle problem is user caused. Wet clothes are heavy. Often, they get arranged badly during the wash/rinse cycle in a way that in not well balanced. Sometimes, the machine is simply overloaded..with towels or jeans, for instance. Try to move the wet clothes around a bit to balance them. Also, if the machine's feet are not leveled to the floor...the machine will not be able to use the feature which assists in compensating for imbalance. If you think the machine is faulty, run it through a wash/spin without any clothing in the drum. If you still have an issue with an 'empty' machine, get a service person in.

Constantly off balance

I have a kenmore elite oasis top loading washer about 3 years old. I took it apart and checked the springs and the rods and the plastic ends that hold the rods in place and all of them look fine. I run an empty load in the washer and it still goes unbalanced on the spin cycle. My water bill has tripled due to the fact that every load takes 3 to 4 washings. I need help please!

Washer will not spin

There is a safety switch on the lid ... when it went out of balance perhaps the adjustment changed or it got damaged (loose wire etc.) BE SURE TO PULL THE PLUG BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY REPAIRS

My kenmore elite smartwash quiet pak 9 he 4t seems to be off

have you tried lower spin speeds? I found with heavy items such as towels and jeans it is best to lower the spin speed. also washing like heavy items on a certain wash cycle is best - i.e. towels on bluky/bedding.

hope that helps.

Washplate problem Kenmore Elite Calypso washer

Hello genny2626

You said, your 6 year old Kenmore elite top loader's wash plate doesn't seem to go through its proper motions. When the lid is closed and the washer has filled and the agitating cycle begins, you can hear a vibrating noise as if the plate is trying to move on the gentle cycle, but when the lid is opened, nothing has moved at all. The drain and spin work fine, and the machine goes through an entire cycle without error messages, but the clothes aren't clean. You said, you have heard a lot of horror stories of how expensive these washers are to repair, so would like an idea of what's wrong beforehand.

Here are a list of common vibration noises

Noisy, vibrating, off-balance

Is the washer level? Does the washer rock when pushed
against the corners?
The washer must be level. The front and rear feet must be in
firm contact with the floor. Check that the locknuts are
tightened. See “Level the Washer.”
Is the floor flexing, sagging or not level?
Flooring that flexes or is uneven can contribute to noise and
vibration of the washer. A ³⁄₄" (1.9 cm) piece of plywood under
the washer will reduce the sounds. See “Location
 Is the load balanced?
Evenly distribute the load in the washer basket and make
sure the height of the load does not exceed the top row of
basket holes. See “Starting Your Washer.”
Do you hear clicking or other noises when the cycle
changes from washing to draining or spinning?
When the drive system shifts or the washer basket settles
between cycles you may hear noises that are different from
your previous washer. These are normal washer noises.
Is the washer gurgling or humming?

Is the washer level? The wash load
should be balanced and not overloaded. The washer must be
level. The front feet should be properly installed and the nuts
tightened. Reset the rear leveling legs (if needed). See the
Installation Instructions.
Did you completely remove the yellow shipping strap with
cotter pins? See the Installation Instructions.
• Are the gears engaging after the drain and before spin, or
is the upper part of agitator clicking during wash? These
are normal washer noises.

Let me know if any of these are the solution!

You might need one of the springs. unplug the washer and take the cabinet off first. look around for broken or missing parts

Stopped operating in the spin cycle

With a heavy blanket you probably have an out-of-balance condition which doesn't let the machine spin out and drain. This would keep the door lock from opening. Try hitting the Stop button twice. This should cancel the cycle and let the door lock open after a little while. Then either redistribute the load or add some items and run a Spin and Drain cycle.
