Kenwood VR-405 receiver

I have my home theater system setup with a 880 Harmony Universal Remote. For about three weeks now when I turn on to watch tv I have to most of the time go to the help feature on the remote to get my receiver to come on. When I'm done watching tv and I tune off my system I have to go to the help feature to turn off the receiver but sometimes it won't turn off remotely. This doesn't happen all the time but this happens very often enough to know that something isn't right. Also while viewing a program, sometimes the volume and the mute won't work. Sometimes it does sometime it doesn't. I turn on the system everything works fine and then after turn off system for a while and I come back and turn it on this happens.
Wondering could this be in my receiver or the remote. I've reprogrammed the remote twice but it still acts up. I've talk with a tech at FIREDOG at my local Circuit City Store and at the Home Theater Store that programmed the remote and they are telling me perhaps it could be in the receiver being it's not doing it everytime and that it's nothing wrong the the remote.

Your help would be appreciated on this matter.

Is this signal receiver a thing that normally happens with the problem I'm having and for this to be replaced in your estimate what would it cost for this repair?

  • dirtyred Dec 24, 2007

I'm assuming in order to clean this lens I must take the cover off the receiver to do this cleaning you mentioned. I'll probably just take it in just in case there is something else wrong. Just like today, one minute everything worked fine and then hours later it was doing it again. Thank you Tech 8

It seemed to have worked but another problem came about after getting everything back together. The LED is just blank can't see anything now. All I did was remove the cover, cleaned and put back together and then when I plugged everything back up and turned on, this occured. Even though it's working now I still have to go to the help mode on remote to turn on and off the receiver. It won't shutoff or come on when it's suppose to like it use to. Always now have to go to the help mode for this.

Don't know what's the deal, it's puzzling to be having these things happen one after another, one thing corrected another thing occures.

Thank you Tech 8, will take in for troubleshooting.

I would agree that the receiver is at fault. The signal receiver for the remote is faulting and a good tech should replace it at minimal cost.

Try cleaning the little window where the
IR detector is on the receiver, and clean
the transmitter led on the remote also

If that does't work then it may
be a defective IR circuut problem
IR led or resistor or possibly IC

Yes it is common thats the reason I suggested
cleaning the lens of the receiver window, and
the remote. The signal from the remote has
to pass thru the lens in the window of
your receiver if the lens is dirty then
signel striking the IR led wil not be
clean and will affect the level of
the signal reaching the IC.It ahould't
cost that much to repair did you clean
the lenses? most times thats all it takes.
If not take it to a good honest technician

  • Eugene Merritt Dec 24, 2007

You would have to remove the cover
to clean both sides of the window
I have seen many sets where just
cleaning the lens on the outside
    solved the problem especially in
smoking areas (leaves a film on
    everything) that why I said
try that 1st.Any good tedh will
take it apart & blow it out anyway
and clean the window etc before
checking the circut.Let me know '
    how things turn out

  • Eugene Merritt Dec 25, 2007

Then its a circuit problem, take it to
a technician to get it fixed,The led
may or not be ok you cant see
    anything because the panel is
    dark to prevent ambient light
    from entering

Reear speakers not putting out sound

If the TV sound source is through stereo RCA cables you'll only get rear sound if you choose one of the DSP modes. A digital source might work as expected, IF you have things correctly set up for multi-channel.

Turns on fios box and receiver but not television

I would hook the harmony back up to your computer and the update the remote. If that does not fix the problem then I would down load the firmware and then update your remote. If you still have problem I would manually teach the power command (Learn) to the harmony remote. Harmony calls this “Learn command” It’s a button in the lower right corner while in the “customize button” tab.
Hope this helps

Programming Harmony 880 Remote to Mute with CC on Sony Bravia KDL-40W4100

Do you use a Home Theater receiver along with your televison?  Are other components, such as a DVD player, VCR, Blu-ray player, etc. connected?
If so, it's possible that the Mute function on your remote is muting the sound from your receiver, and not the TV itself.
If that's the case, you'll need to look at the details of the "default" buttons for your activities, and see whether the Mute function is associated with your TV or your receiver.  If it's set for the receiver, you need to change it to be associated with the TV.

more info would be nice. If you're using optical, make sure its securely in both the tv and your vr-405 receiver. I have owned the vr-405 since 2000 and i just purchased a sony 32xbr6. HDMI into the TV, optical out to the receiver, it sounds amazing!
