New carb, new coil, new plug, sometimes it will crank and run good, sometimes it just sputters, and sometimes it will not seem to be firing at all. Before I changed the components listed it would just be intermittent in starting.

Ok, if the gas has been sitting in the fuel system for two years, it is now no good and has "varnished" the carb etc. The fuel system must be drained and run dry at the end of every season or you will have this occur. The solution is to disasemble the carb and clean it with carb cleaner and reassemble. You will need a few new parts and seals to do this and a lot of patience. Easy way is to take it to the service guy and live and learn.
To prevent this, use a fuel stabilizer in the fuel before storage.

Try this locate your coil / magneto and disconnect the kill "shut off wire " and try to start if it starts your switch may be bad or wire broken..if still no spark using a rubber handled pliers ...Pull your plug wire and place a screwdriver or similar metal piece and in the plug wire now bring the screw driver close to the engine block or Frame if spark it is your plug..if not your coil needs replaced...not a hard job just use a business card to set clearance on your coil..good luck

My 650 series 190cc briggs and stratton starts and dies. I've tried everything. I can't figure it out. It only has six hours on it . its brand new?

First of all; if your engine is that new, take it back where you bought it and have them make good on it.That being said, if you're priming it and it starts then dies, then it's not getting fuel on its own. You've run some bad gas thru it or let gas sit in the carb (Ethanol Gas=BAD) and it is clogged up somewhere. Easy fix if you're so inclined. I'll link you to a good video that shows you how to do this carburetor. Just be very aware of how the linkage to it is hooked up (take a digital photo, trust me). Ignore the first part of the video about removing just the bowl. Take that baby off and go THRU it with a good carb cleaner. Remove the bowl gasket and set aside, as carb cleaner and rubber are not compatible. Here's the video link. I hope this helps; I know it's frustrating; I go thru this every day and keep coming back for more! :
Best of luck. James

Two years ago i purchased a Craftsman riding mower with a Briggs&Stratton 24 hp inteck v-twin, it ran fine the first season but that was it. Last year i tried to get it started by changing plugs and...

Gas is so poorly refined these days, Youll notice the fuel stabilizer says it is only good for about 30 days. although i cant give specific instructions on how to clean out the clogged jet in your carb, if it runs on starting fluid, a clogged jet is deffinately your problem. start with the float bowl make sure it has clean fuel in it and the primary jet is usually in the bolt that holds the bowl on make sure its clean and if the float hanging down opens the needle valve and fuel flows your good to that point. if the engine still wont run, or only runs with the choke on. get some carb cleaner spray and go at it, make sure you can blow through every port and jet, BUT WATCH YOUR EYES you never know where that stuff is going to exit.

next year winterize it, drain the fuel and run it till it dies.
or i like to winterize my engines by replacing the regular fuel with a little bit of aviation fuel as that stuff can sit for years, just dont operate or mow for more than 2 or 3 minutes on it.

Good luck

24 hp Briggs Stratton sears riding mower engine wont start unless you use start fluid cleaned filter have flow to engine

If the mower starts and continues to run after injecting, you may want to make sure the choke is working properly. If the choke plate is not closing all the way, it will make cold starts difficult.

Engine won't start unless you us starting fluid then it runs fine

Starting fluid is REALLY bad on this engine.

Try WD 40 before ever using starting fluid.

Time to change the plugs. and look at the choke for proper adjustment,

Next start using a fuel inhibitor along with some gas treatment with your fuel, this should clear this little V Twin up.

This motor has a history of bending push rods, make sure you change your oil every 30 hours.

Hope some of the tips help.

What type of oil is used in an Intek 6.5 engine? Powers a log splitter, cold weather application.

30 weight, should hold about 2 qts. Use a synthetic oil, will flow a little better when cold than conventional.
