Question about Sewing Machines

1 Answer

Hi. My friend got a featherweight off ebay, and I am going through it and greasing it, etc. I am not able to get the needle to stay in the needle housing and I am wondering what kind of problem this is. Is it the hand screw or the screw that goes on the left side? Is this a problem I can fix myself or do I need to take this to a repairman?

There is a little coller with a thumb screw that tightens and holds the needle ..that might be missing .. make sure you have the correct type needle ... the little thumb screw should tighten down the needle if its assembled correctly .. make sure its not backwards .. i have a few of those machines .. i will look closer (if i can find them) if you need more help

Worth of Singer Sewing Machine Featherweight Serial #AJ562314, cat.3-120

"Worth" is such a difficult term as it depends on who is involved in the discussion, what the physical appearance and operating condition are, what accessories are included, where it is located, etc. etc.

You may want to try comparing with machines that may be listed and/or sold on eBay. Featherweights are currently favored by quilters, but it depends a lot on the particular model, etc.

Ultimately, the worth comes down to what someone is willing to pay.

Bobbin thread is in big loops

It doesn't sound like a timing problem Featherweights rarely have that. It's most probably insufficient top (needle thread) tension. I suspect there's some gunge, lint or broken thread between the plates. Have it apart and give it a good clean then reset it.

Singer featherweight 11 cotton keeps breaking

The top thread breaks
1. the needle thread is not threaded properly
2. The needle thread tension is to tight
3. The needle is bent or blunt
4. The needle is incorrectly inserted
5. The needle thread & the bobbin thread are not set under the presser foot when starting to sew
6. the threads were not drawn to the rear after sewing
7. The thread is either to heavy or to fine for the needle

Bobbin thread won't come up with needle-featherweight

Try a new needle, remember needle flat side faces the rear of the machine and double check your threading.

I have a singer featherweight, Serial number AL409402, I'm trying to find out if this is a model 221 by the serial number, can you tell me if it is?

Singer has on their web site with a database of their serial numbers. Since you have the serial number to your machine, it will be easy to find out.
Hope this helps.

Inserting needle on old singer machine

Hi Terry--

If your machine is 40-50 years old, it might be a Singer Featherweight portable. (If it is, you have one of the very best machines ever made!) On the Featherweights, the flat of the needle faces left (and the needle is threaded from right to left). The bobbin goes in a bobbin case; you'll see a small notch when you look down on the bobbin in the case. That's where the thread goes. I'll email you direct with more information.
