Question about Kenmore 73502 / 73504 / 73509 Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

The lights will not turn off.

When I opened the doors (side-by-side) there was an odor like an electrical short inside the refrigerator. The lights were on and the plastic cover was extremely hot to the touch. The food container on the top shelf under the lights was very hot. I pushed the two door switch probes repeatedly but the lights would not go off. However, when the probes were pushed in, the refrigerator mechanisms started up - the fans and the compressor. Wound up removing the shield and the bulbs.
Of course, the warranty just ran out!!!

    I've been trying to answer you, but I was having a problem trying to figure out how to do so.
    I have a Kenmore Elite model 795.77564600.
    I have not tried to locate the short.

Carol, Would you please send me the model number for yor bottom Freezer made for Sears and sold as a Kenmore? Many refrigerator are mad by the same company but sears uses a model number system that needs to be decoded to find the OEM parts. This refrigerator has been the type I have had no one been able to tell me the model number. I have even called Sears and asked! An example for a refrigerator from Sears would look like this 513.265989 for example only. I will try to find their model locator's and send you a photo of it. The problem you are having is serious and indicates a short circuit that needs to be addressed to Sears. If the lights stay on while the door is closed it will cause the refrigerator to run all the time and confuse the thermostat in to thinking the temperature is too warm. I have always hated those small print warranty contracts. They are always designed to make you believe you have good protection while it takes an Attorney to tell you the truth.     Ok, Found the whole series of model numbers for you type. Not sure what year model yours is but Sears had a recall because of electrical shorting. Your model number works like this for a 73509 the sears number would look like this 596.73509200

    There was six series for every different model with the last 3 numbers ending in 200, 201, 202, 203, 300 and 400

    Have you been able to locate the short that is causing your lights on? Have not heard from you and learned a lot about your brand. Maytag originally made that model and sold it to Sears under the name of Kenmore. There is quite a few different versions of your model and would like to know if there is anything I can do to help you. Hope in some way I have been helpful. Thanks again, Sea Breeze

    OK I believe the problem is the light switch part number 1268248

    Let me know and use care while removing. Unplug refrigerator and mark your wires so they go back in the same order as they should be or you really run into problems. Rate me if this helps, Thanks Sea Breeze

What does it smell like? Burnt plastic , mold , rotten food? Check gaskets and temp in fridge, food could be spoiling. It is tough to get serious odors out of fridges. Bleach, vinegar are good for killing odors. Check manufactures recommendations.

Bad smell in Refrigerator and cleaned it throughly and it still stinks. Strange since it will get worse then better for no reason. I cannot find a drain in this side by side. If anyone has any ideas please...

The drain is at the bottom inside the freezer section. It is possible a piece of something got behind a panel, or otherwise in a "hidden" spot. Or something is in the defrost water tray underneath and every time it defrosts, it gets wet and releases the odor again. Look in the drain pan by removing the kick plate (bottom grate under the doors) and look in the drain pan to see if anything is there. Use a few open boxes of baking soda in the fridge (to absorb odors), and wipe the inside with some vanilla extract. that combination will help with the odor. But the source of the odor needs to be removed first.

Bad odor when you open the doors of the refrigerator

The odor is coming from your drain pan under your evap coil. This is very ahrd to get to. They make a product that you can set in you fridge and let it run and it will take out odors. Google Refrigerator odors and it will take you the site that will ahve the product. rus

Frigerator throwing off an odor

Begin by carefully wiping the door gaskets down with 2 cups of vinegar in 4 cups of water. If that doesnt solve it wipe down the entire inside of the fridge with the vinegar water and then put an open box of baking soda in their.and leave it to absorb odors.

Kenmore elite odor

If something spoiled in there, especially if it sat inside for awhile. you may be out of luck. The disagreeable odor may be permanently installed in the insualtion inside the mouldings. Replace it; otherwise..try washing inside thoroughly with soap and water or simple green. Then baking soda and water and leave doors open until completely dry. Then B-soda on a plate in the box.

Bad Smell in Fridge

To remove odors:
1. Remove all items from refrigerator or freezer. Throw
out any spoiled foods. Take out removable parts and wash
them and door gasket with mild detergent in warm water.
Rinse well and wipe dry.

2. Wash interior walls and door liner with solution of 1-2
tablespoonsful of baking soda to 1 quart warm water, and
wipe dry. Leave door open and let it air out well, with a
fan directed toward inside, and opened windows if climate

3. If odor still remains, try one or all of the following
means of odor removal.

a. Spread baking soda out on shallow pans (like shallow
glass casseroles, pie plates, or jelly roll pans lined
with foil) and put pans on shelves to absorb odors, or on
the bottom and in baskets of chest freezer. Leave open
and unplugged.

b. Buy activated charcoal (which is specially treated to
remove odor molecules from air) at some department store
housewares sections, appliance store, or pet shop. Spread
out on shallow pans and put on shelves of refrigerator.
Turn refrigerator on low setting and run empty a few days
so odors will be absorbed.

c. Spread cat litter in shallow pan in cabinet, turn on
and run empty a few days. If odor is disappearing but is
not all gone, replace old litter with fresh litter.

d. Pour several ounces imitation vanilla (not pure
extract) in a shallow saucer, put on shelf and let run
empty a few days.

e. Put fresh ground coffee in cereal bowls inside the
refrigerator and let run empty several days. A slight
coffee odor may remain, but will disappear after washing
again with baking soda solution.

f. Pack each refrigerator shelf with crumpled newspaper.
Set a cup of water on the top shelf or sprinkle the
newspaper lightly with water. Allow refrigerator to run
for approximately 5-6 days. This method takes a bit longer
but has been effective in removal of strong odors.

g. Buy a commercial odor remover, and follow instructions
exactly. Several companies manufacture a liquid
concentrate which sells for about $3.00 for 1/4 to 1/2
ounce. A couple drops are put on a piece of cotton and
placed in the area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or
in a room.

Three of many brand names are: "Odor-Away" by Wrap-on
Co., available at hardware and hospital supply stores,
"SuperCD" IBL Household Products by Crackerbarrel Sales,
Avenal, New Jersey, available in pet supply department
or special products in grocery, or "Clean-Air" at some
appliance repair shops.

Hospital supply stores carry Dow Chemical Hospital
Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into cabinet and
quickly shut the door. Repeat.

4. If none of these methods removes all the odor, then it
has probably penetrated into insulation. Contact an
appliance service company for an estimate on cost of
removing the liner and replacing the insulation. If cost
is too high you may prefer to get a new appliance. It
could be used for occasional cooling of soda pop where
the odor will not get into the beverage.

Burning plastic smell INSIDE refrigerator

look for a door/light switch, and depress it do the lights go out?? bad switch will keep the lights on and melt plastic lens covers.. could also be nothing and you happened to open open the door right as a defrost cycle was completing( there is a heating elemnt in your freezer) watch your dairy, ice cream nad milk are real good indicators of refrigeration issues. as far as runnig all the time no real" time limit" as to how long it should be running.
