Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet
My toshiba laptop is having problems reading audio CD. When i put the disc in it whirs 3 times and then stops completely. I've tried this with DVDs and the same thing seems to happen. Occasionally, a CD will work and I'm able to rip it to itunes, but most of the time the laptop just won't read it. Same thing happens in windows media player too.
I've had this laptop over a year, it's been in for repairs once for overheating, which has now been fixed.
Your laptop likely has a dirty laser in the CD reader ... if someone smokes around the machine then it usually has to be manually cleaned (drive removed, cover disassembled and laser cleaned) but if its just dust accumulation then you can purchase a "cleaning disk" .. that looks like a normal CD but has little brushes mounted such that they sweep away any dust from the laser .. the cleaning disks run from $1 to $8 .. make sure your CDs and DVDs are clean .. you can wash them with mild dishwashing soap and warm water by hand .. ... pat dry ... if nothing else works then your laser may just be getting weak .. replacing the laser usually costs more than a new drive ...the time when your computer was overheating could have shortened the life of the laser .. once in a while i see a tiny hair over the laser .. the laser tries to focus on the hair instead of the disk .. the cleaning disk often takes care of that ..
