Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet

My laptop is having problems reading audio CDs

My toshiba laptop is having problems reading audio CD. When i put the disc in it whirs 3 times and then stops completely. I've tried this with DVDs and the same thing seems to happen. Occasionally, a CD will work and I'm able to rip it to itunes, but most of the time the laptop just won't read it. Same thing happens in windows media player too.

I've had this laptop over a year, it's been in for repairs once for overheating, which has now been fixed.

No I've tried the CD on another machine and it works fine. There is nothing wrong with the CD. Even brand new CDs are unreadable on my laptop.

Your laptop likely has a dirty laser in the CD reader ... if someone smokes around the machine then it usually has to be manually cleaned (drive removed, cover disassembled and laser cleaned) but if its just dust accumulation then you can purchase a "cleaning disk" .. that looks like a normal CD but has little brushes mounted such that they sweep away any dust from the laser .. the cleaning disks run from $1 to $8 .. make sure your CDs and DVDs are clean .. you can wash them with mild dishwashing soap and warm water by hand .. ... pat dry ... if nothing else works then your laser may just be getting weak .. replacing the laser usually costs more than a new drive ...the time when your computer was overheating could have shortened the life of the laser .. once in a while i see a tiny hair over the laser .. the laser tries to focus on the hair instead of the disk .. the cleaning disk often takes care of that ..

I'm thinking you need a new CD.
Sounds like this one has gone south on you.
Easy to do. You can even get used ones on e-Bay

Not talking about the CD itself--you need new hardware.

Toshiba laptops, like any other laptops, can read all cd regardless of the manufacturer. It is unlawful for toshiba to design a laptop that can only read toshiba recovery cds. You can reinstall your OS on a toshiba using a dell disc.

Does it work for anything? Does it read data or audio CDs? Canyou save files to it? Can you format a CD/RW? If NOT reinstall the DRIVER.

If it does I would reinstall the DVD display program, such as WINdvd.

Yes, that's what it looks like. Make sure you put this in the right section next time, though.

Toshiba A205 Satellite CD Read problem

I believe your laser is bad, depending on the type of disc it reads will require different strengths coming from the laser from the drive to read the information.

Just to be sure, take a damp q-tip with glass cleaner and gently clean the laser. Now try a few different audio cd's and if it doesn't work then the laser is definitely bad and the drive will have to be replaced.

CD player fails to read CDs

It's likely it's dirt on the CD lens. You can try cleaning it with a lens cleaning disc. But if the lens has been damaged it will never read the disc again, no matter how many times it is cleaned.

Playstation 3 wont read some cds or play downloaded demos.

I'm also having this problem as well, it has to do with the OS and it is corrupted. It seems like the "Game mode" has been corrupted preventing us from playing games on the hard drive or reading games.

Try cleaning the unit with a laser lens cleaner disc and see if this helps at all. If not it sounds like your laser assembly may have failed.
