Have just hooked up my Viewsonic VA720 moniter as the main moniter to a new laptop that I have. The laptop is an ACER Travelmate 6293 running windows XP. When I come to start up my computer each morning the Viewsonic screen only flashes on for a few seconds and then goes blank....I have to turn the screen off and on about 40 to 50 times until eventually it stays on....It is almost like it has to warm up......Any Ideas..??

Clarification Request

tim0856, Test #1 Will unit do same thing when connected to a different KNOWN GOOD pc fully booted to the WIN-desktop? Good working LCD monitors NEVER EVER have to warm-up. Have you done the "flashlight" test on this monitor? Can you see the desktop when you shine a flashlight 1" from the "BLACK SCREEN" at different angles? Does this unit have a "lay on floor black brick smps supply" or unit use wall to monitor line cord? Have you calculated an approximate total # of "ON" hours this unit has seen? Now here are some things to check into!! Do you have a warranty to be used? Will viewsonic do a swapout for cash+old monitor? sending you a refurbished unit back to you? Have you visited YOUTUBE to see some short video clips of LCD monitor disassembly and /or repair to see what is inside your typical LCD monitor and become familiar with what components fail inside of them? Also check another post for Viewsonic by "brieisfabulo dated sep 23, 2009" with reply by "buddymc dated sept 24,2009" here on FIXYA . Get back with me on what you plan on doing. Also try www.ccl-la.com/badcaps.htm for more info. Also find out all you can about "cold-cathode-fluorescent-tubes" and their power source called INVERTERS. and understand what a "switch-mode-power-supply" is. My best guess is that your SMPS is going into SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE MODE because it is detecting a fault in the inverter circuit or with itself. Well, now that I've told you enoughto get both of us in trouble, get back to me with your plan of action, swap, trade for new, contract for repair, repair in your home???? ....Any Ideas..?? Here's one! Stop pushing the ON/OFF switch for the monitor even though it should last up to and beyond 50000 actuations. Just kidding guy!!! Leave monitor OFF after doing the test. I'm louie12fix on fixya or lmistyrel @ aol.com Bye for now.

You most likely have a capacitor that has changed value. When a capacitor goes bad it will work after it heats up. Sometimes a bad cap will have a bulging top or show signs of leakage. Sometimes can only be checked with a meter.
