If you have a CD loaded, and you get that error, it means the laser can't detect focus on the CD.
If the laser detects focus on the disc but the turntable motor doesn't spin up you still get that error. Sounds like the laser is the problem in yours.

Try disconnecting your battery, reconnecting it, and resetting your stereo. If that doesn't work, the constant power (yellow wire) or ignition wire (red wire) may have come in contact with ground or isn't properly connected. Make sure everything is connected properly and try resetting your stereo. If it is still flashing "protect", the unit needs servicing Contact JVC Customer Care Center at: 800-252-5722.

Set time on jvc car audio

I fixed this problem with info. from another posting. You push and hold the select button until demo comes on the screen, then release it and push the button that advances the cd. This will take you to the hour and minute screen. Turn the volume dial to set the time.
