Question about Gateway SX2800-01 PC Desktop

1 Answer

On my second SX2800-03 first one I brought back after a week - power button comes on but no single to monitor, keyboard or mouse. On my second one now and after three weeks - same problem - power button light comes on but "nothing".. Thinking about returning it to Costco and getting an HP - never had issues like this before.

What is the best way to connect 2 computers to this monitor

If you have two separate computers for different purposes, such as personal and work use, you may find it convenient and necessary to connect both to a single monitor. Many monitors have dual inputs, making such a connection simple. However, you might need a keyboard, video and monitor switch to accomplish this task if the monitor lacks a second input. Dual Inputs
Step 1 Examine the back of your monitor for the presence of dual video inputs, such as a single VGA and DVI or HDMI output.
Step 2 Connect the VGA cable to one computer. Plug the other end of the cable to the matching input on the monitor. Rotate the retaining screws until tight at both ends of the cable.
Step 3 Plug the DVI or HDMI cable into the back of the second computer. Insert the other end into the monitor's digital video input. Screw down the retaining screws if you're using DVI.
Using a KVM Switch
Step 1 Ensure both computers are turned off. Place the KVM switch on your desk where it is within convenient reach.
Step 2 Locate the video output port on the back of the KVM switch. Plug a VGA cable into this port. Plug the other end of the VGA cable into the monitor.
Step 3 Plug the VGA monitor outputs from each computer into the inputs on the back of the KVM switch. Tighten the retaining screws down for each connected VGA cable on the computers and the KVM switch.
Step 4 Plug the keyboard and mouse cables into their respective outputs on the KVM switch. Plug each set of keyboard and mouse cables from their ports on each computer into the matching inputs on the KVM switch. Plug each cable in sequentially to avoid mixing them up between machines.
Step 5 Double-check that the mouse, keyboard and monitor cables leading from each computer all correspond to the right machine. Plug the KVM switch's power cord into a nearby AC outlet or power strip.
Step 6 Turn the computers and monitor on to verify the connections are correct.

Required Items

  • VGA cable
  • DVI or HDMI cable
  • KVM switch
  • Power strip (optional)

After unistalling kaspersky anti-virous and rebooting mouse pointer froze in the middle of the screen. using keyboard now. so far i have tried every suggestion short of re-installing XP pro.

I dont know if u have tried this or not. Unplug all the cables from the back of the pc. Make sure not a single cables is connected(power cable too). Then press the power button and hold it for 30 seconds and let it go after that. Then reconnect the power cable, the monitor, keyboard and mouse and restart the pc. Check if it is working or not. If it does not try a different mouse and if the different mouse also does not work I think a format will be required.

Keyboard and mouse port not responding on start up. It's saying press f1to continue or press f2 to enter set up. Once I press the key it does not respond.

Does the keyboard light up and if it is an optical mouse then do u see any light under the mouse? If not then try any other keyboard and mouse. If they do not work either try this. Unplug all the cables from the back of the pc. make sure not a single cable(power cable too) is connected on the back of the pc. then press the power button and hold it for 30 seconds. Then reconnect only the power, monitor, keyboard and mouse and check if they are working or not. If fails. then most likely the motherboard has gone bad.

Hi there,

I want you to try something next time this happens, instead of rebooting the computer, just cut power to the monitor. Then switch it back on.

Does the screen come back up?

Comment back and let me know

Sounds like there may be more than one problem, so first let's make sure you shut the computer down completely:

1) Press and HOLD the power button on the computer tower until it goes completely dark. A single press often puts the computer in sleep mode, so holding the key for approximately 5 seconds usually forces a power off. After doing that, If you're still not sure if it powered off, unplug the AC power cord from the back of the computer tower for a few seconds and plug it back in. Now, make sure all other cables (monitor, keyboard, mouse) or wireless USB adapters for keyboard and mouse are securely plugged in where they are supposed to be.
2) Press the power button on the computer tower briefly to turn it back on.
3) Everything may be working now, but if not:
a) Monitor still dark? Make sure the monitor is on and plugged in, also, there is often an input source button on the bezel of the monitor to toggle between input sources (such as VGA, DVI and even HDMI). Press and wait a few seconds for a picture, repeat slowly at least 3 times.
b) Keyboard or mouse still not working? If wireless, make sure they have fresh batteries and that the wireless USB adapter is plugged into a USB port firmly. If wired, make sure the cables are plugged in firmly into the correct places on the back of the computer.

If all that fails, your new computer may be faulty and need to be returned to where you purchased it.

Belkin 2-port kvm switch

If you have the PS2 mouse and keyboard (round plug-in) instead of USB this is an easy install. however if you have USB you will need adapters to make this work, but I do not recommend it since more problems could occur. If you have the PS2 ends first shutdown both computers. remove your monitor, mouse, and keyboard from your computer and attach them to the single end of the switch. Mouse goes to Green, Keyboard to Purple. Take the other ends and connect the first group to your first computer mouse, keyboard, and monitor (same colors as above) and repeat for 2nd group of wires on 2nd computer. turn the computers on. you should get display, keyboard, and mouse for 1st computer. after both boot hit scroll lock 2 times within 2 seconds and then arrow up or down key to change between computers.
