Thanks - turns out I read somewhere else it might be the memory card/s were loose. found a "how to video" by google search, took them out and put them back in (removed some dust from inside the machine casing) and all is good!

The Beep is telling you that something is wrong. On the back of the PC is 4 LED lights If everything is ok then all 4 lights would be green. in the manual is a breakdown of the error codes the lights indicate. If you have lost your manual you can download it here; http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700/en/om/Y69490LRs.pdf

Hello there betsyjmp.

Here's your geek-steer ...

Those beeps you hear ... they are a very, very good thing. It's your motherboard trying to tell you about something possibly being amis, in the only language she knows.

Refer to the code indexes for your PC here. Attempt to determine a match, then take whatever corrective actions are advised.

Good luck betsyjmp, and please post back ...

When I attempt to turn on computer it beeps but nothing happens.

You likely have an internal component failure or improperly seated memory module. It could also be caused by a faulty cable, such as a monitor cable, drive error, etc... You can reference this link to assist you in diagnosing the defective component based on the beep code. Beep codes or BIOS codes beep in different series of long & short beeps so that a defective component can more easily be identified.

I have a dell dim 2400 that will not boot. When attempting I get a beep code 1-1-2. Is it fried??

Go to the Dell website. Under Support, at the upper right corner, type in 'Dim 2400 1-1-2 beep codes. The first thing that comes up is 'Advanced Troubleshooting Dell Dimension 2400 Series". Half way down the next page under 'Beep Codes' you'll find Code 1-1-2, the cause of which is 'Microprocessor register failure.' This probably means you'll have to take your 'puter into the shop to get it repaired.

Beeps, wont boot up

Most of the time when it beeps, and there is nothing show on the computer screen, it is a RAM problem. A stick of ram may have gone bad. If you have two sticks of ram in the computer, you can try to remove one stick at a time to see which one might have gone bad.

Four beeps wont turn on, Dell 4700

The four beeps usually indicate a memory problem and it won't pass it's Power On Self Test. Try reseating the memory sticks, or, if you have two of them, take one out and try to start the machine and then swap them.
If this doesn't solve the problem, you most likely have a bad motherboard.

Beep problem Dell Dimension 4700

Beep problem update - Dell 4700. Last night started computer - cold boot. The screen had just started to light up and then went black and computer started beeping in an interrupted sequence. Fan speed increased considerably (suggesting overheat?) Shut it down and attempted two restarts with no success. This morning I unplugged all cords, opened case, pulled and reset memory cards and vacuumed inside. The computer was very clean so really don't suspect that dust was an issue. Buttoned it back up plugged in plugs and restart successfully accomplished. Have no clue why. Some square electrons, I guess.
