Re: wag354g

From the pieces I am gathering I cannot see how to replace the supplied modem/whatever from BellSouth with the modem in the WAG354G (I see no identification of the required configuration options) however we may be able to use only the lan side of the device as an access point connected to the modem device supplied with the DSL service from BellSouth. In order to do this you will need to provide the manufacturer (Alcatel, Netopia and Westell are three possible manufacturers) and model number of the device provided by BellSouth -- it appears they have 4 or more. I may be able to determine some options based on what you provide. I believe the Vista compatibility issue for the router is not related to usability but some special configuration software that can be bypassed using the following web-based approach.

The preceding should get us access to the wireless configuration if needed as follows

I am trying to connect to the internet using the linksys WRT54G and a motorola modem from AT&T. The computer recognized and connected to the Linksys (set up was very easy), but the internet will not...

The steps will very some depending on the model of the modem and router but these steps should help.

How do I proprly set up a Linksys router for FastAccess DSL? Important Note: Due to some operational issues it is VERY important that you have the latest firmware on your Linksys router. Please go to the Linksys Download Website and ensure you have the newest firmware.

Configuration of a Linksys router depends on the type of broadband service and other equipment connected. This is a generalized Linksys Router FAQ and some firmware, capabilities, and actual screen shots may vary. This initial setup is all that is needed to configure and connect your Linksys based network for FastAccess. Any additional setup for features like WEP, DHCP IP ranges, port triggering, etc is out of the scope of this FAQ. Other FAQs may be more appropriate and provide more specific information:
•If you are using a BellSouth supplied Westell 2100/2200/6100 modem please reference the FAQ here.
•If you are using a BellSouth supplied Motorola/Netopia 2210 modem please reference the FAQ here.
•If you here IFITL (PCData) service please reference the FAQ here.
•Both the modem and router must be reset to default.
•The BellSouth Installation CD and Connection Manager are not required to use this configuration.
•Since BellSouth assigns static IPs via your username the configurations shown are applicable to both dynamic and single static IP customers.
• You will be using the PPPoE client built into the Linksys router for connectivity/authentication. Please delete any other unused PPP clients like Enternet300, RASPPP, or the native XP client.

Section 1 - Linksys Router Configuration
bred.gifStep 1
Verify that your NIC card is set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically". Power down the router and any PCs. Connect one of the router's LAN ports to the computer NIC and power up the router and then the computer. Reset the router to default by pressing the reset button for roughly 25 seconds (exact placement of the button differs per model).

bred.gifStep 2
Important note: The following screen shots are based on a Linksys BEFSR41v.2 router and your screen shots may be different, however the process and configurations are the same. Open a browser session and enter in the address field to access the Linksys Interface. At the Username and Password prompt enter admin (without quotes) in the Password Field.

bred.gifStep 3
On the Linksys Setup page select PPPoE from the WAN Connection Type pull down. Enter your BellSouth Username followed by "". Enter your BellSouth Password. Select Keep Alive and enter 180 seconds Redial Period field. Do not enter anything in the Host Name or Domain Name fields. If your model has the ability to adjust MTU size (not shown below) select Enable or Manual and enter 1492 in the Size field. Click on Apply to save the changes. You may get a "Settings are successful" message, click on Continue (if required).

Section 2 - Physical Connections and Power Up
bred.gifStep 4
Power everything down and physically connect the modem, the router, and any computer(s).

Westell 2100 shown. Pictures by Andy Houtz
bred.gifStep 5
Power up the network equipment in this order:

Westell or Motorola Modem (wait for DSL synch)
•Linksys Router
•Open a browser session and enter "" in the address field to access the Linksys Interface. Click on the Status tab from the menu then click on the Connect button to connect to the Internet.
•Go surfing!

bred.gifImportant Additional Information
•The Westell 6100 and Motorola 2210 modems have an "Internet" light that is green whenever there is an active PPPoE session initiated by the Westell. Since you are using the Linksys to establish the PPPoE session the light will stay off. This is normal.
Do not change the Linksys Operating Mode from Gateway Mode (default setting) to Router Mode, or it will not function correctly.
•The Linksys "Auto" MTU capability does not function correctly on some models/firmware. You must manually enable the MTU and adjust the size to 1492 (or less). If you are experiencing slow/erratic speeds, constant disconnects, or receive a "Can not obtain IP address from the server" or "PPPoE negotiation fail" errors click here.
•You should check your tweak settings to optimize your new network. Reminder: If you change your MTU, make sure that it is set identically on all equipment (PCs and routers) in the network.

I hope this was helpful,

The internet connection is fine (DSL AT&T).

1. You may have a an IP address conflict.
2. check the device connected to the router
all computer need to be connected at the same time.
3. Bring all the computers up one at a time and this should resolve the address conflict.

How do I enable wireless on a 2wire 1800HG router?

Hook to any port by copper line and then from a browser access If you received this WAP from Bellsouth/AT&T etc. you may need to get the admin password and user from them. There you will have a section for your wireless settings that is very similar to Linksys, Dlink, or any other wireless DSL router.

Connect the cable from the LAN port on the DSL modem to any of the 4- LAN ports on the Linksys Swicth (not the port Labelled Internet), then from any of the remaining 4 ports then connect your computer. Also try using a cross-over cable to modem from the DSL LAN port to the Linksys.

Changing from DSL to Road Runner Turbo

I'm sorry to say but you cannot bypass the modem capability of the DSL Westell Modem/router because that is really made to function as a DSL modem and a router at the same time, so the best way to make everything work here since you change from DSL to Cable internet just need to get a wireless router like a Linksys WRT54G that can make everything work again like before.....

Still Havin Trouble

Yes, you can view the front of your WRT and press the yellow Cisco button on the front and hold it for a second. Do this after you have your laptop or whatever on and DSL connected after a reset of everything.

Universal plug and play will take care of the rest. You hold the button down on the front panel (doesn't look like a button just a light but it is a button), hold it until it starts flashing white and leave it for a few minutes so it can do its UPnP thing.

Hope this helps. Post again with more specifics if the problem keeps recurring. Also if you have changed your DSL password (bellsouth) online you must change it in the modem too.

Hooking linksys to gigafast

There are some question's that should probably be asked before we begin. Generally a wireless adapter or network card is present in a computer to allow it to access a wireless router which is connected to an internet service provider (generally a dsl connection through a phone line or a cable modem from your cable provider. Your request seems to be to get a computer to talk to a wireless router to talk to a wireless router to talk to your internet service provider (dsl or cable). I will assume after reading this that you probably have or will get a wireless adapter for the computer to talk to one or both of the wireless routers you appear to have. Wiring two wireless routers in the same house may be useful if the home is large or the wireless routers operate on different bands (a, b, g or frequencies) and you have different computers that require the different bands. however both wireless routers are in my experience connected to each other using a wire. Once we clarify the above we can probably address the connectivity issues for the devices you require.
