Question about Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 40GB 7200rpm 133MBps Ultra ATA/133 (ATA-7) Ultra ATA/133 (ATA-7)... (6K040L0FT) Hard Drive

I have used my maxtor 8 as a slave. I now wish to use it as a normal drive. My attempts to install XP produces an indication that NTLDR is not present. I have managed to start the installation program but this reports a failure. What can I do?

Double check the jumbers on the drive that it is set to master and not slave.

After that make sure your Bios has it set as "primary" disc / hard drive. If the old drive is still present, make sure it is set as secondary disc / hard drive.

Also make sure you have the boot order set up. Maxtor 8 should be set as boot first than the other hard drive.

All of this is in your BIOS boot up. Try hitting the "pause" key as it is booting up. When it pauses you will be able to see what key to get into the bios.

Sometimes the key to get into bios is the "delete" key or one of the "F" keys. But that will vary.

If you had it set to slave status, there is a jumper on the drive controller next to where the cable plugs into. that jumper needs to be set to the correct position. typically there are 3 jumper positions Master, Slave, and Cable Select. If this is the only drive in the system, you can set it to master or cable select position. If there are multiple drives, then every drive needs to be set to cable select.
The diagram on the drive label should tell you which jumper is cable select position.

Dual boot xp with windows 8

No solution now, Install Windows XP again on first partition, Make sure BOOT.INI, NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM in the same partition in which Windows XP is loaded. Then install WIndows 8.
OR in the current scenario you've to do much technical work using third-party tools.

How do I get technical support. I am experiencing a NTLDR is missing error.

Here are a few things to try:

    1. Make sure the CD/DVD drive is empty.
    2. Make sure there are no USB Keys/Flash Drives/Pen Drives plugged into the computer.
    3. Reboot the computer after making sure no extra disks or external storage media is plugged in.
    4. If you're running Windows XP - attempt to fix the NTLDR error by booting the the OS CD and running the recovery console. Once in the recovery console, type:

    Copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy d:\i386\ c:\

If it asks you to overwrite the files say "y".

    5. If the system still fails, then you may need to slave your hard drive to another computer to get your data recovered. After doing this - you may need to reinstall or perform a repair install of the Operating System using the Windows CD.

What I would suggest, is to take the drive and install it as a slave drive. Make sure your pin settings on the drive are set to slave, and your main drive is set to slave. Then XP and Vista will recongize it so you can pull the data off it, then reformat the drive and see if you get any errors.

are you mounting it as the only drive or with another one... if you are mounting it as a slave usually you don't need a jumper... the jumper setting will hopefully be on the sticker.

xp and up will autodect the drive..

What new HDD will match my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8?

You can use any size HDD in your computer as a slave and it does not have to be an exact match for the maxtor. You will however need the make sure that the connections on the new drive match. For example SATA drives will not attache to an IDE cable and vice versa. The drive that you mentioned is an IDE style drive so unless your MOBO has SATA connectors on it you will need to buy an IDE/EIDE drive.

    Pin settings

There are four Jumper settings on a Maxtor:

    (got it from

    posted by by mr.smit:

"The 2nd row, is for DS(Master): only 1 drive in PC, or the drive that you want to boot up from.
The 3rd row, is CS Enabled: Cable select, the computer desides wich harddisk is master and wich one is slave
The 4th is cap limit: windows cannot run on harddisks that are to big, like 300gb, so putting jumper on cap limit (capacity limit) makes it smaller for windows to use it.
The 5th row has no use, or i don't know what it does, either of that 2."

I would like to add about the DS (Slave) setting. It is used if there is another drive present on the system which you want to boot from. It will become a spare Hard Disk.

Here is a picture of a maxtor drive indicating where to find model number and jumper settings.
