HP LaserJet 4000 that stays off line.

I realize when I say this that you will be a little skeptical but I will say it anyway . the Paper may be damp - do you notice any curling from your print if only printed on one side? this is the easiest way to test for damp paper- while the paper is damp the Electrical resistance is much higher than when its dry and this is what typically gives a Light copy however once the paper has been though the Very Hot fuser rollers to \'fix\' the first side, the paper has been force ably dried and so the second side is much Stronger in toner. try a new ream of paper and see if that helps

You will need to use a CROSSOVER patch cable.

If all IP addresses are manually set (i.e none obtained from a DHCP server), and the addresses are unchanged from when the router was in place, everything should work. But if you're using a normal patch cable, it won't - you need a crossoer cable.

check the usb cable of printer try to reconnect it and make sure you use usb port in your printer properties

This printer will not work with a Mac - it has no postscript.

The only laserjet 4's that work with Macs all have an "M" in their name - 4M, 4M Plus etc.

You might be able to get a Postscript personality module for the printer to effectively upgrade it to the "M" version.

Not sure about a mac, but on windows you have to have the HP toolbox running.

iam using hp5000n laser printer. It is giving 13.1 &13.3 error messages freequently. (This is paper jaming problem)

See if it is the right driver. Intel Mac is not the same driver set as regular Mac.

Also, Apple + HP or Okidata often = issues.

You can try to do a "Cold reset"

turn off the printer hold down  the Menu/reset button and turn it back on.

Do you hear the machine go into rotation? the 4 plus has a high pitch sound follwed by the fuser turning ( you'll know when it does it) if it doesn't go into rotation then there is another problem.

If you have the manual there is probably a section about this. It does sound like some parts may be wearing out and the printer is asking for new ones. Once you have installed the maintenance kit the message will only go away if you clear the maintenance count. For example the laserjet 4000 has a 200,000 page maintenance interval. Once you reach 200,000 pages the error message appears and you need to reset the maintenance count to zero to make the message go away.
