If you are unsure on how to splice the cord back together it may be best to just purchase a new cord. You can find a new G6 cord and it is easily installed into the switch at the base of the Kirby. Kirby G6 Power Cord
Check the cords two wires with an OHM meter for continuity replace if you get a reading showing OL The ground wire you can forget about this test
If any sort of numbers appear in the meters display the cord is good
Replace the switch instead
It could be the power cord or even the switch. I suggest taking it to an authorized Kirby repairshop and have it looked at. It could be something as simple the power switch
If the brushead is removed, there is a safety switch which prevent the machine from operating if the brushead is removed or not installed correctly.Either this switch or the main power switch could be the culprit,as well as the cord.
You can look at the wiring diagram and try to figure out how to use a circuit tester to test the switch but I would just suggest just swapping it for a good one (always good to have one good switch for testing) and see if it solves the problem.

The chances are it is the safety switch 1st and the foot switch 2nd. The safety switch is in the front of the fan housing of witch the bell housing hooks into. Both are about the same price plus labor. So feel free to do it yourself or to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://kirby.com/ Customer Service – U. Could be the switch, I would check the cord 1st. It has 2 wires running thru it, one may be open. That power cord goes bad often, if anyone is pulling on the wire rather then the plug, then it would have have stretched and break.
