Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

3 Answers

My Dell inspiron 6000 has a LCD screen broken from inside. The display shows pieces with different colors and random shapes when turned on. When I connect to an external monitor, it works fine. I am wondering whether the broken part is an essential part of the monitor, or is it just some kind-of support, which provides a background. If it is the latter, can I just remove that layer and have a good monitor? I can rip open a laptop monitor without causing damages and replace stuff like inverter and backlight, but can do few things beyond that. I am not sure if this broken piece is within the LCD assembly itself or not. Is it relatively straightforward to rip-open an LCD itself? Also, I am sure the backlight and inverter combo is good. If my LCD is doomed, can I use this on my IBM T43 laptop, which unfortunately has a lcd problem as well. The combo looks very similar. Thanks!

The screen can't be repaired, but it can be replaced. It's feasible to do it yourself if you're tech savy, but you'll most likely have to google for guides that show you exactly how to replace the screen step by step. I work for Computer Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot. It's very unlikely that the two screens are compatible.

The LCD is a complete assembly. You can purchase them. They are very expensive from the manufacturer, however you may find one on ebay, or the are some cites where you can buy them more reasonably.As far as replacing one, if you can change the inverter you can change the screen. The hard part is getting the Bessel apart.

The LCD is trashed, you might be able to salvage the Backlights but that is fairly tight work. Replacement LCDs are around $150 or so on EBay and fairly easy to install.

How to fix blank screen on dell laptop

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

Streak in LCD Screen

Judith,

I'm going to state in my own words, as to what I think you have stated, originally; (Please bear with me as this may be clumsy)

" I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 Notebook PC.
This laptop has problems with the Hinges, and Base Cover.

The Base Cover area where the Hinges, and their respective screws go, is beyond repair. To properly repair it, I would need to purchase a Base Cover, Hinges, Hinge Brackets, and a 'Bezel'."

At this stage I am a little unclear,
" I think I would have to buy the entire bottom of the case,
{ Base Cover. Got it }, and replace the bezel that had pieces break off at the hinges too,....."

Hmmm.....Bezel....
Bezel that is close to the Hinges,..........

1) The Display Bezel that is in Front of the LCD screen? Thin plastic frame that resembles a picture frame? Bottom part has Hinge Covers formed in it?

2) Palm Rest Cover?
The cover that covers the top of the Body, of the laptop?

The major portion is below the Keyboard towards you. The rest of the Palm Rest Cover, is two rectangular pieces on each side of the Keyboard.

One of these two pieces broke? (Connector piece?)

3) Center Control Cover?
Is above the Keyboard, and below the Display Assembly.
Has the Power on button in it, for one.

To go on;

You purchased the same model on Ebay?

Same exact model number? Look on the bottom of the laptop.

Reasoning?
Primer:

An LCD screen cannot produce light by itself. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight (Present technology), can be a CCFL, or a series of LED lights.
The Dell Inspiron 1525 series used a CCFL.

Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

(Approximately 2mm Thick, by almost the height of the LCD screen, Long.
2mm is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch. { .0787 )

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power (Electricity) from the laptop, for the LCD screen, and the Backlight.

Point?
The screen Inverter, and the LCD screen, are a MATCHED unit.

Looking at the back of both LCD screens, what is the Dell part number/s, or LCD manufacturer model number/s?

[ One LG example from an article on InsideMyLaptop,

http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-lcd-screen-inverter-dell-inspiron-1525-laptop/

Scroll all the way down to Step 14. Read under the first photo, and view the second photo ]

Want to see if the LCD screen you are using, matches the Inverter in the laptop.

Dell, just like all laptop manufacturers, use different manufacturers of LCD screens. (LG, Sharp, Hitachi, etc)
May go with one for a few years, then off to a different one. (Or one's)
May change when a particular laptop model comes out.

The LCD screens may be slightly different models. In turn they would use different screen Inverters.
This = No.

4) Translucent 'streak' going from bottom left corner, to upper right corner.

That translates to;

A) Video Cable damage (Dell = Display Cable)
B) LCD screen damage
C) Bad graphics chipset

Have you used an external monitor to diagnose? A VGA monitor?
If so disregard the following;

A) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF. Connect a VGA monitor to the laptop.
You can use a CRT monitor (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor that has a VGA cable attached.

Example of a VGA Cable, and VGA port, (Connector),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

Connect to the left side of the laptop.

B) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.
By default the display should show on the external VGA monitor.
If not:

Hold the Fn key down, simultaneously tap once on the F8 key.
Still nothing showing on external monitor?

You have at least three display options;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY.

Try again.

If the display is the same on the external VGA monitor, you have a bad graphics chipset. (G.P.U.)

If Not, the problem lies in the Display Cable, or screen Inverter, or LCD screen.

As you have seen the Display Cable connects to the motherboard, then routes up under the Left Hinge, and up into the Display Assembly.

The Display Cable can be damaged from normal use, over time.
Now add to it that you have had extensive Hinge problems.

If the sheath of the cable shows any visible damage, the tiny wires inside stand a chance of being damaged, also. (Stretched/Broken)

I would suggest testing the Display Cable. Perform a continuity test with a multimeter, for each wire in the Display Cable.

[ An economical multimeter can be purchased for around $8 to $12.
Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example.
Or perhaps you know someone who has a multimeter. Analog or digital is fine]

C) Did you reconnect the Wireless Antenna Cables correctly?
Reaching here but inquiring minds want to know.

[ The above is from - Dell Support > Inspiron 1525/1526 Service Manual,

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1525/en/SM/index.htm

]

D) Would like to know what you did to follow Anti-Static Precautions?

I'm not following on the points of;

1) You installed what you considered to be a working LCD screen, into a laptop you bought off of Ebay; and the display stopped working on the Ebay laptop?

Or;

2) Or is your statement, that after receiving the Ebay laptop, your original laptop would no longer show graphics on it's display?

IMHO I would use the case parts of the Ebay laptop, and rebuild your original laptop.

Awaiting corrections, and possible questions.

joecoolvette

Dell 1545 laptop with white LED screen on start up. Works fine when connected to external screen via vga connector. Everything else works ok. Broken & remade connections between mobo & screen = no...

If the display works fine when connected to external screen via VGA connector then then the problem is either with the LCD display panel ( which consists of the display panel and inverter ) or the LCD cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. You could try to re-seat the cable connection on the back of the LCD panel.

power system on holding the letter D while pressing power button, (see if you have 4 solid colored screens displayed) if you do, then the LCD is ok, and this issue is likely a problem with the motherboard

Dell Inspiron D530 - Screen Malfunction - Rainbow colors?

Reseat the display cable (under the keyboard) and while you have the lcd hinge cover off, inspect the cable where is goes thru the hinge assembly for chafing and possible broken wires.

If reseating doesn't help, RUN DIAGS

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&cs=19&dl=false&l=en&s=dhs&docid=E3FE44D4AAF58D13E0301E0A5517246B&doclang=en#1
If they fail then replacing the LCD display cable and or the LCD would be next.

Dell Inspiron 6000 to TV

On a dell laptop, the key combo FN  F8 cycles through the display options. Laptop screen, External screen, Laptop and External screen at the same time.  Try pressing the FN F8 key to get the video to display on both laptop and lcd and the same time.  If that doesn't work you can also change the settings on what the laptop does when the lid is closed.  Check the power settings in the control panel.

attach an external monitor to be certain the video card is ok,
next
Re-seat the video card cable to the lcd screen,
dell site explains how to remove top and keyboard.

your real issue may be the cable itself or the lcd screen.
