Question about IBM ThinkPad 600E 2645 Notebook
I want to format the hard-drive for this IBM ThinkPad 2645, but I can't seem to get a dos prompt when I reboot. I don't see a selection there that says "DOS Prompt" by itself. I do see "SafeMode with Dos Prompt", but that just scrolls up text, and doesn't allow me to do anything. Is there some other way to get to the Dos Prompt so that I can type in the command to format the hard-drive?
Thanks,
Vince J.
You can get dos prompt even on windows XP. just click start-Run.enter cmd.exe. you will get to see command prompt is that you want.. Enjoy !

Vince,
First of all, What operating system do you have on this machine?
If it's Win98, you can get DOS.
If it's WinXP, you will have to make a bootable CD to get into the DOS prompt.
Check out this link :
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
You can also get into the setup from CD, by changing the boot sequence from BIOS. (If the installation CD that you have is a bootable CD)
Hope this helps.
Thanks & Good luck!

Alright, Here's the link for Windows XP Pro Boot disk :
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...
But, I think it's better if you change the boot sequence by going into BIOS. And then restart the machine with CD. you can then enter setup and install windows on it.
You can get into IBM BIOS by pressing F1 key when your turn the machine on.
Make CD Drive to boot first and then insert CD, restart machine.
Try it and let me know.
Hope this helps!

Hi,
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply Adee. :)
I have Xp Pro Installed on this laptop. I have a windows cd as well, but when I insert it and reboot, the computer restarts itself before it even gets to the point where I can select to do a clean install. It does read from the cd and acts as if it's about to about to go through with the install process, however, at some point it just reboots. So, I was trying to get into the dos prompt so that I could wipe the hard-drive manually. I think it's because there isn't enough hard-drive space available to reinstall XP. There just little over 1gb of space there.
Some files and programs are there which I can't delete or uninstall for some reason, so I need to go the dos route to clear everything out and start fresh.
Do you have a direct link for the actual bootdisk from that website? There's a lot of stuff listed there, just want to be sure I download the correct program to get me into dos.
Thanks for you help. :)
Adee, changing the boot sequence in the bios to have the cdrom as the first device, did not work, it still does the same thing, reboots a little while into the install process.
That other link you provided requires 6 six floppies to get into the dos prompt, I don't have a floppy on my computer, nor is there one on this ThinkPad, at least as far as I can tell.
@Guest,
Using the dos prompt from within XP via the run option doesn't work either, I've tried that several times.
I'm gonna take a break now, I've been at this all day. Any other suggestions, feel free to post them, I appreciate the help tremendously. :)
I'll keep you all updated on what ever progress is being made.

Before currapted the window it was window xp. my laptop not boot from CD and i don't know either the problem of boot option or bootable CD.
