How to get into the Dos prompt at reboot for the IBM ThinkPad 2645?

I want to format the hard-drive for this IBM ThinkPad 2645, but I can't seem to get a dos prompt when I reboot. I don't see a selection there that says "DOS Prompt" by itself. I do see "SafeMode with Dos Prompt", but that just scrolls up text, and doesn't allow me to do anything. Is there some other way to get to the Dos Prompt so that I can type in the command to format the hard-drive?

First of all, What operating system do you have on this machine?
If it's Win98, you can get DOS.
If it's WinXP, you will have to make a bootable CD to get into the DOS prompt.
Check out this link :

You can also get into the setup from CD, by changing the boot sequence from BIOS. (If the installation CD that you have is a bootable CD)

Hope this helps.

Thanks & Good luck!

Cant install windows

System will show CD as C: and "COPYING" doesn't make drive "BOOTABLE".
You have to let the restore CD do the whole process of FDISK, FORMAT and INSTALL.
If you want HD bootable with no "WINDOWS"
use this command at A: prompt.
I'd have to get out my Win/DOS notes for more.
Try "Help Format" if that doesn't work.
I would Let the CD do everything if you are not familiar with DOS installs.

Is it hard to replace hard drive on 2645

Here is a link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual

It's easy to change out. But you will have to reinstall the OS.

Good Luck.

Ibm think pad 600e

Do a search for memtest86.iso. Burn this image to a cd and reboot your computer. When your computer reboots it should begin checking your memory for errors. If you still have problems it might be your hard drive.

How to clean up hard drive on ibm thinkpad 2645 600e model

i) when you open My Computer you will see partitions or your hard disk partitions(such as C, D, E , F)
right click on D and you will come with some option, click on format option and all the data on your drive will lost or cleaned up completely,,

continue this process withother other drivers, other than C Drive since it has system files and u cant delete it ......

ii) if you even want this delete try to follow the procedure of loading or formating xp or freshly load xp on computer and follow onscreen instruction you will see the C Drive and now press the D to Delete that drive and follow some instructions...and totally drive is completely cleared

That unit it about 10 years old.
Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade the CPU (processor)

The RAM is a standard 100MHz non-parity SDRAM SODIMM. The 2645 can use 128MB DIMMS for 160MB maximum. It has 32MB internal and two slots.

The hard drive size is limited by the BIOS. Any standard 2.5" hard drive should work, but may show as limited size, maybe 20GB.

Get a PCMCIA modem.

If you found a docking station for this unit, you'd be in better shape. Like I said, it's 10 years old. It won't be easy.

Thinkpad 600E

Error 19990301 on a Thinkpad 600 usually indicates that the hard drive is not properly connected, and error code 19990305 signifies "no bootable device". So, it's the hard drive.

First of all, I would try removing and replacing the drive to see if that cures it. You can get the service manual from Lenovo at

If this doesn't fix it, the hard drive is faulty. However, small size hard drives (10 or 20Gb) which suit these older machines are very cheap on eBay.
