Picture not in focus

Devices: All projection TV's (HD or analog), especially Samsung

If its a Samsung HCN653W (or similar model), the first thing to try is the menu option named "Magic Focus", which tunes the set's focus.

Otherwise, it sounds like a job for a convergence. Perform a convergence procedure on your TV, and if the problem recurs within a few days/weeks, then your TV's 'convergence amplifier' board (aka "convergence amp board") is starting to fail.
This board may fail completely, in which case, your convergence procedure will fail to improve the picture.
A "convergence procedure" can be performed entirely by just using the appropriate setup menu option and your remote control.
This board may partially fail, in which case your convergence procedure will properly converge the Red, Blue, Green colors on just part of the screen, whereas a properly functioning convergence amp board will allow complete convergence of the colors across the entire screen.
Your TV's convergence procedure instructions will be found in your TV's Owners Manual.
At least one Projection TV manufacturer recommends that the consumer perform a convergence procedure every 30 days, but most TV owners find that excessive, and might only do one when (a) there's an evident color convergence problem in any part of the picture, or (b) once every 3-6 months.

cost to you: $zero
.

If the convergence amp board is bad, cost for a service call would be $300 (USD) plus $100 for a new board plus 50% markup on parts = about $450 (USD)
Cost to order a new board online: about $100 (USD) + shipping + sales tax.
Alternatively, if you can solder/desolder STK's (Power Amplifier Integrated Circuits), one can repair a convergence amp board for as little as $30 (USD) or so.

Mitsubishi rear projection picture that has a blue/green tint

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then yourconvergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. The power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

What you will need to do is convergence. You can get a repair kit fromTvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement parts, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from TvRepairKits.com . It includes replacement coolant, step by step instructions, support, etc.

Convergence issue Blue not convering correctly, but the other colors do. The blue is warped at the top and bottom of the screen. Is this problem something that can be fixed?

Yes,the covergence ICs and precision resistors can be replaced to rebuild the area. A reputable shop may charge around $300 . If you are technical person,I can guide you further to do yourself!

The colors are not lining up

IT's called convergence. Go into the menu and look for convergence set-up . Look in your owner's manual. Your owner's manual will tell you how to converge your set. When you go into the convergence mode which is digital on the newer sets you will have a cross-hatch pattern then you use the remote to set the convergence. THIS SHOULD SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM UNLESS THE CONVERGENCE CIRCUIT HAS A PROMLEM...GOOD LUCK...KEN

Double image/ out of focus with green and blue seperation

Your tv is crt-based and is out of convergence. In other words, the settings for keeping the Red, Green and Blue images aligned have drifted and must be reset. This is common with CRT projectors and CRT rear projection tvs.

Refer to your owners manual for instructions on re-aligning it.

How to reset to mfg settings or how to set red/blue color convergence?

You could try using the first time set-up option and see if that resets it. If you don't have the owners manual it can be found at the following link.

There are detailed instructions on how to set the convergence in the manual on page 8.

Sony HDTV Convergence Issue

No, You will not solve the problem with only changing the convergence IC, associated resisters may also be required.
Beside of that, after spending time to get parts and replace the ICs, you need to make and adjustment the color lines (about 14 lines)
This adjustment without experience will take you about 3 to 4 times and 4 hours each to get thing right (if you areskillfull, most of people failed this adjustment).. The total time spend for this problem would take you full 24 working hours.
I successfully adjusted one set of my big TV (95%, need more more round)), on another set one I failed.
