Printer not communicating with computer but I have tried unplugging/disconnecting USB and restarting - nothing works - help

You might want to try your "system restore" to when it was working fine. If this fails you've got to reinstall the drivers from the manufacturers site or the install disk. These drivers often become corrupted during windows updates or just general use. Thanks, Dana

Delete the printer and all of its software ... reindtall according to the manufacturer instructions. You may find updated driver and instructions at the manufacturers web site

When I try to scan or print a message comes up telling me to ck power and usb connections. I have unplugged and restarted computer 4 times and still have problem


It could be a communications error message, the printer is not communicating with the computer.

  • Disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable.
  • Disconnect and then reconnect the printer power cable.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Remove and reinstall the printer software

  • If your printer does not function properly or communication error messages appear when using your printer, you can remove and reinstall the printer software.
    1. Click Start®Programs or All Programs®Dell Printers®Dell Photo AIO Printer 962®Uninstall Dell Photo AIO Printer 962.

    2. Follow the instructions on the computer screen to remove the printer software.

    3. Restart your computer before installing the software again.

    Will not print from computer but will copy so that tells me my printer its self works but cant print anything off from computer or scan. i have changed usb port nothing restarted so many times disconnected...


    Is it possible to test the printer in another computer to rule out the possibility that the printer is faulty ? I would also like to know what is the model of the printer /printers.

    There are few things I would try to fix this problem,
    on the computer where the print spooler won't start in command prompt
    sfc /scannow to check that one of these files might be corrupted
    C:\windows\system32\spoolsv.exe
    C:\windows\system32\spoolss.dll
    also it spooler issue could be problem with registry, unfortunately I don't
    know that area too well.

    The problem could also be usb drivers related, (before using this I suggest making restore point just in case)

    Unplug all usb devices and boot computer to safe mode.

    Go to Device manager, in the view Tab Select the Show Hidden Devices Option

    Uninstall Human Interface Devices\USB Human Interface Devices and\or Composite USB
    Uninstall Universal Host Controllers\USB Root Hubs
    Uninstall Universal Serial Bus Controllers\USB Host Controllers
    Uninstall All USB devices Printers. Scanners, Etc

    Reboot computer to normal windows, it will automatically reinstall the usb controllers.
    Windows might ask you to restart your computer, do that if prompted.

    Go to Printers and Faxes and click File
    Select Server Properties
    Open Drivers Tab and remove all drivers
    Install your printer software and now plug your printer.
    Test Printing, if the printer still doesn't work R.click on the printer
    Select Properties and go to Advanced Tab,
    Click New Driver
    Choose Generic Manufacturer and on the right select Generic / Text Only
    and click next, you might be prompted for xp cd to install the drivers.
    Try printing again. If this won't work then i m out of solutions.

    Port not recognized - printer and computer do not communicate


    unplug printer ,shut down printer, shut down computer, then restart computer, and plug printer back in after computer is fully up and running turn printer back on
    and that should solve the problem

    No communications computer to printer


    With the Lexmark printers communication subsystem you MUST let the driver ask for you to plug in the printer. DO NOT plug the printer into the USB port until told to do so.

    To fix a fouled install:
    (1) Uninstall the Lexmark drivers in Add Remove Programs
    (2) Shutdown the computer
    (3) Disconnect the printer from the USB port
    (4) Restart the computer
    (5) Run the Driver Installation software
    (6) Cancel ALL attempts by windows to auto install the printer
    (7) When the software asks for the printer connect it and continue

    When you got this message were you trying to scan?

    What I want you to do is a copy. Doing a copy will generally not require you to be hooked to the PC.

    Scanning and Printing all require communication from the printer to the computer. Failure in communication can either be something on the computer, something wrong with the cable or rarely something wrong with the printer.

    I'm assuming you have done the following:

    1. Power off your printer and your computer.
    2. Unplugged the power from the printer
    3. Unplugged the USB cable from both the printer and the computer.
    4. Reconnect the USB cable to the printer and the computer.
    5. Plug the power back into the printer and make sure the printer is on.
    6. Turn on the computer.

    Those are general troubleshooting steps that can be done for any communication problem.

    If you have done all of those try this:

    Press and hold down the Windows key on the keyboard, and then type the letter R.
    Type "devmgmt.msc" and then click OK on the Run dialog.
    Find the item Universal Serial Bus controller.
    Click the + sign next to the word Universal Serial Bus controller.
    Do you see USB Printing Support?
    Yes:
    Right-click on USB Printing Support, and then click Properties.
    Does the Device status say “This device is working properly.”?
    Yes:
    Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software?
    No:
    Click the Troubleshoot button to try to resolve the problem.
    Does the Device status now say “This device is working properly.”?
    Yes:
    Try your print again (might need to restart)
    No:
    Might have a problem with your Printing Support

    No:
    Might have a problem with your Printing Support

    Let me know - if you have a problem with your printing support you'd really need to contact your PC MFG for help - but you can always try uninstalling the USB Printing Support and reinstalling it (only if you have your disks that came with your printer).

    sorry my printer is lexmark 1200 series, tried restarting,unplugging usb, power supply to printer but keeps just sayin printer not communicating with computer
