If its a build up you can use a razor scaper after you warm it up just a bit
'warm the burner do not get it hot
then scrub the dust with a non abrasive pad/sponge
with a chem. called cryramabrite

Spectra range. Both large burners diagonal across from each other have stopped working. Is this fixable. Other burners OK.

yes it is is this glass top type ? very easy to work on and get parts for , first thing unplug unit from walll, there are two screws near the front of the oven.to the left and to the right of the oven.near the top front . once you remove the screws lift the top up and support it with something look at all the wires and you will see one that has been burned , the only wire you can use inside of this area is what they call glass wire , so it will take the heat . I am almost positive this is just a burned wire , replace the burned wire with glass wire and you should be all set, keeping in mind move the wires away from the burners this time so it wont happen again

Stovetop ceramic burner turned black and smooth

Do you have a proper ceramic top scraper ?, if not buy one (about £10 UK)

Get a bottle of cream cleanser and a plastic type pan scrubber

Soak the area with warm water , pour on some cream cleanser and work it in with the scrubber , when you have formed a nice creamy froth use the scraper to get underneath the scorching

It is a lot of hard work but it does come off

Cracked glass top

Your crack was most likely cause by a flaw in the glass top. Most GE smooth-top ranges (espesially if manufactured prior to 1/1/06) have a five year warranty covering this type of failure. The labor is not covered after the first year. Check the back pages of your use and care book for warranty info on your model. I'd advise against continued use of the cook top with a crack, as spills can get to components and cause further damage.
