Your os already uses the space needed as ram. this is of course slower because of access/read/write speeds of off board memory. it will not increase your computer if you allocate larger swap files sizes for this.
better to eliminate tsr's that are in your start-up which you do not use. along with any applications which are outdated that you do not use.
this assumes you have a pc, and not a mac.
if you are using vista, i reco more than 3 gig or its a dog. too many drm files and other unneeded overhead.
xp will perform better for you.
good luck
mark.

from your reply, i think you did not understand the answer. the operating system is already using a portion of the hard drive for ram. to increase that size of that ram (which is slower than memory chop ram) you can access the control area (using xp?) control panel, then system properties, then advanced tab, then virtual memory settings. there you will be able to set a paging file size greater or lesser than the preset value.
it may help, but not as much as more memory. i hope it does for you, but i would not expect any improvement. but it is worth a try. it is usually set for 1.5 gig. (1500 meg) that is normally more than enough unless you are putting unusual demands on the system.
    good luck,
would appreciate a revised rating, so that others may benefit from my efforts without worrying that i am giving out inappropriate answers.

I need to add space to my compaq presario desk top. i don't know how to on this computer. the model# SR5034X

If you want to increase cpu speed so you need to increase RAM memory.
You can fix it on motherbord of desktop cpu.
But if you have low space on disk storage partition so you can add space to desktop with 2 method.
(1) you can add harddisk to desktop cpu with sata or IDE .SATA harddisk is best if your motherbord support SATA.
You can add harddisk as you like for example 80 GB or 160 Gb.
(2) If you want to add RAM memory for speed reson you can purchase new RAm and fix it in memory module slot on motherbord.
There is 2 type on
RAM in currently.
DDR1 and DDR2

you can add RAM memory like 512 MB or 1GB or more.

I have 256 MB RAM which is slow, can i upgrade it to 512 MB RAM

Depends completely on what motherboard the computer has and what it supports, I could check on it if you have and brand and model of the computer, or from the motherboard.

Sure the prosessor speed doesn't affect the memory amount possible don't worry about that, just need to find out how much is supported and at what speed etc.

Thanks,
Ekse

Acer Aspire laptop is very slow after installing RAM.

u can reset ur OS again it will refresh ur performance and then ur speed will improve otherwise

2 things that affect the speed of system

Hard Disk make a big difference in Bootup time and program working

Ram is also a factor if u want to install RAM u can buy 2 chips of 512 MB each becoz u know in these laptops they work good if they have RAM on both Slots thats why prev there were 256 mb each on both so get 512 each on both but remember specs shud meet ur old Ram specs or atleast compatible if higher specs than urs u can ask me more on this !

kindly rate me WELL if u find me helping

Hitachi 500 mb disk drive under Vista (Business)

to work with vista you must be having the minimum system requirements of 512 mb ram otherwise you will b experience slow...

if you have 512 mb ram or more than that then may be it s operating system problem just try reinstalling vista again....
and the drive in which the os lies may be in ntfs file system format ... so it is slow.....
