Go to this link. Wait a few seconds for all the files to load. Select your OS in the box, then wait a few more seconds, and you will see the drivers displayed.
You will need to download and install both the driver and the MP Navigator (under the Software heading). Click on the link and follow the instructions to install.

Canon support has a print head replacement (it's the black thing that the ink cartridges sit in) for about $50 including UPS ground shipping. Their phone number is 1-800-828-4040, part number is QY6-0049-000. I was going to buy one, but when I talked to the parts dept., they sold me a new one (with same capabilities, including duplex printing) for $120 plus tax and free ground shippping - with 1 year warranty on all parts. You can decide, mine was a few years old and is starting to have multiple problems, so I opted for the new one.

I tried the other solutions listed here - and no luck. After cleaning the inside of the ADF, like the manual suggested - no change. How are you supposed to do that anyway? Deep cleaning the inside of the machine also has nothing to do with it.
I finally figured out why things that I copied with the ADF had lines/marks on them, but those placed directly on the platen (big glass) were fine. When you copy with the ADF, the copy is not being made from the large glass area. Rather, there is a thin glass area right next to it.
Turns out, there were a couple of smudges (goo) on that thin piece of glass which were creating long vertical lines down every sheet. Cleaned the glass - problem solved!
Gosh, I hope this helps someone else save some time, and frustration.

OK lift the gray lever up and remove the cartridges, look just below the gray lever and you will see two rounded protrousions inside towards the rear of the black box, grasp these protrousions with your thumbs and forfingers and gently pull toward you, ther may be some resestance but pull smoothly do not ****, the print head will come out. There are no wires to disconnect the circuits are touch circuits.
