Question about IBM ThinkPad X40 Notebook

1 Answer

Thinkpad x40 cannot see the wireless adapter

My wireless wasn't connecting. I decided to remove the connection. When I went to add it back to the machine - aka add hardware, it doesn't find the wireless adapter which should be Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI). when I look at the system info, there is no wireless adapter found. Nothing in device manager for it.

thanks. I actually had tried removing connections and adapters, but then it couldn't find the adapter. As it turned out, I opened up the back and the wireless card was a little bit unseated...pushed it in and it now works fine. Thanks for your help

Try booting to safe mode, remove any connection setups in the network connections control panel. and then remove the adapter from the device manager.

Reboot your system, then try adding hardware and setup your wireless connection.

If that doesn't work, test the adapter on another computer, and/or test another adapter with your system. (Your adapter might need a burial)

Download problem

Im assuming its wireless ?
The Lenovo Thinkpad is a line of primarily business and performance laptops that have wireless capabilities offered in its standard feature set.
The Thinkpads can have issues with the wireless such as poor connection speed, undetected wireless cards and problems connecting to a wireless network.

Slow Connection

A Thinkpad that can connect to wireless networks or Internet may exhibit slowdown or performance issues when downloading or transferring files.
A few possible fixes for this problem include reconnecting to the wireless network, resetting your router or modem or moving away from any devices that could interfere with your wireless connection.
No Connection
If the Thinkpad cannot connect to the wireless network at all, it could have a software or a hardware issue.
Thinkpad laptops need the wireless receiver button switched to the "on" position in order to pick up any wireless signals.
The operating system should pick up the wireless card automatically but a driver or operating system update could fix any compatibility issues between the OS, the network card and other devices on the computer.
The Thinkpad will be unable to connect to your wireless network if you are attempting to connect to the wrong SSID, network name or are entering the wrong password.
Undetected Adapter
The incorrect installation of device drivers may lead to the wireless adapter or card being undetected by the operating system.
Lenovo's support site, in Resources, contains the specific wireless card drivers used by your Lenovo Thinkpad.
For third party PCMCIA wireless network adapters or wireless USB dongles, the manufacturer of the device should have drivers to install. It is possible that the adapter could have a hardware issue.
Most Thinkpads have the wireless cards integrated into the motherboard, so you would need a complete motherboard or laptop replacement to fix a physical problem.

Internet Explorer Download Problems
While most people use the Internet Explorer Web browser to connect with the computerized world, some are unable to successfully download a file, program or application with it.
There are ways to determine the cause of this problem.
Use the Disk Cleanup

The first avenue to take in determining the cause of download inability is to clean your "C:" drive with your computer's "Disk Cleanup" application.
To find it, click "Start", then follow "Programs," "Accessories" and then "System Tools."
Disk Cleanup will clean your hard drive by eliminating broken file fragments and unnecessary files. These can cause your downloads to be slow and, sometimes, broken.

Antivirus Programs
Another culprit that can prevent downloads are antivirus or antispyware applications that you have installed. Shut those down, then attempt your download again.
If the download completes, then remove the mentioned applications.

Start-Up Programs Sometimes, start-up programs can keep your download from completing.
If you are running Windows Vista, click on Windows Defender, then "Tools" and check "Software Explorer."
Then select "Start-up Programs."
If you find a program that is not necessary to run at start-up, click "Disable."
Then click "Yes" to confirm your choice.

Other Programs
Disable all other programs, then try the download again.
If your download can be completed upon the disabling of these programs, and they are nonessential to your Internet sessions, then keep them disabled via your task manager.

Explorer Add-Ons
Open your "Start" menu, then point your mouse on "Programs."
From the pop-up menu, mouse over "Accessories" and then "System Tools."
Then click on "Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)."
If you are not running any add-ons (a page will appear informing you), then this is not an issue with downloading.

Considerations
If none of these allow you to download efficiently, consider trying a new browser such as "Firefox" or "Opera."
Also, consider the possibility that the page from which you are downloading may have an internal error that can cause the download to be aborted.

I have ibm t20 2647 laptop i just install new window and i couldnt find wireless option now ?

Most T20 models did not have wireless built into the computers by default. You may have to add a wireless adapter to your computer. To verify whether or not you have a wireless card, open the middle cover on the back of your computer (with the computer unplugged and the battery removed) ... you should see a small card about the size of a business card next to an even smaller card. If the larger card has two antennae wires connected to it, you have wireless. If not, you don't have built in wireless and will have to use a USB or PC Card adapter.

Can x40 connect to wireless broadband? Is the graphics ok for games that are not too demanding? Is it suitable for an 11yr old girl who wants to play games & use skype & internet? USB broadband,...

1) Can the IBM ThinkPad X40 series of Notebook PC connect to a wireless broadband router?

I would plug in a USB wireless adapter that is Wireless N.
Example,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6076236&CatId=2688

2) Are the graphics OK for games that are not too demanding?

A) Processor:
Intel Pentium M processor, that with the highest option model, operates at 1200Megahertz. (1200MHz)

B) Ram Memory:
512MB's of PC2700 ram memory. (DDR Sdram at 333MHz. SO-DIMM ram memory)

C) Graphics chipset:
Intel 855GME chipset,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4-M.2FPentium_M.2FCeleron_M_Mobile_chipsets

Like a slug crawling along in deep winter.

USB broadband, and USB mouse?

Sure.
Enough USB ports for this? There are 3 USB ports.

My recommendation is No, sir, or ma'am.
Hate to rain on a parade, but kids expect the laptop to perform gaming on top level, connect to the internet at lightning speed, and pour a soft drink at the same time.

(Kinda of what we adults expect)

She'll be bored with this laptop in a day.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

My ibm thinkpad t40 can't connect to a belkin g router

Hi,
I'm assuming that its a wireless problem.
This method will hard reset the wireless drivers back to default settings, but before you perform this remove power from the modem and router for 2 minutes reconnect power and wait another 2 minutes for them to settle down.

Right click "computer" select "manage" and then "device manager", a list will populate, then click on the + sign next to "network adapters" and right click on the wireless adapter and "uninstall" the device, reboot the PC and wait for windows to detect the wireless card and install the drivers for it, this will appear in the system tray (bottom right hand side) when its done try to connect again.

Good luck

IBM X40 Wireless Radio Keeps Shutting Off

This link will take you to the driver page for your unit. Scroll down to wireless networking and download the latest driver for your machine(there's a couple of different possibilities it could be but you may find that the drivers listed are more recent than the drivers you have loaded on the machine.

Beyond that if you are unable to work out the issues with your wireless you can always purchase a cardbus or USB wireless adapter and disable the onboard wifi.

Post back with you results.

Limited or no Wireless connection

It appears that the TCP/IP got disabled or removed.
Check the TCP/IP settinge of the wireless adapter, it should be the same as the network adapter.

What's wrong with my ez connect?

If you mean the connection manager application that came with the ezconnect adapter opens and then shuts down immediately, that's usually what happens when it doesn't see the adapter. Application says "no adapter present" and closes. You say you're trying to use the ezconnect software with a linksys card, so that's probably the cause. Try downloading the linksys driver software from their site
