My Sony DSC-w55 turns on and reads on ACCESS on black screen.

I just bought this Sony camera, and ive had it a week. I just took it out to use, and during half the day, when i turned it on, the screen was black and all it read was"ACCESS" in the middle. Otherwise it doesnt let me do anything. The shutter keeps opening and closing three times, and finally, in the black background it says" turn the power off and on again" I do this, but the same results happen... HELP...

turn power on and off again. i have turned it on and off and it does
    the same thing.

I haven't dropped my camera and its not even a month old.

so i don't know what could have happened to it.

If you could help me, please contact me at my email at:

Same as all of you on this page. But this problem is now intermittent for me. Next time it surfaces I'll try it. Just glad to realise that it's not a problem of being up in the cold, cold mountains. And it might be occurring as I don't have it in a protective case. Let's see what happens.

  • firefly20 Mar 08, 2008

I've had basically the same issue. My screen remains black and it says "Acess" on it. And after that, it says "turn camera off and on". My only difference with my problem and yours is that my lens are frozen between on and off. It does not move at all. I've tried a few solutions but none of them work. The playback button works fine, and I can easily get on that, but my camera doesn't! It makes a weird noise whenever I turn it on, I think the lens is trying to (and failing to) get unfrozen. Instead of the green light beside the Finder and Playback button, an orange light lights up.

I really need help as this is not my camera and I NEED to fix it! Please help!

I have the same problem and it makes me feel better that others are dealing with this too!! i was on spring break in panama last week and after the first day my camera started doing what everyone is describing...the black screen says ACCESS and the lens opens and closes three times and then it beeps and says to turn camera off then back on again..i figured i had gotten sand in it or something but since others are describing this exact same problem, maybe i didnt do anything! i tried putting pressure on the lens, and holding the power button while this happens, but both things dont work. I just got this camera in december and id really like to fix this problem! email me at bubblebaby4688@aol.com if anyone has ANY ideas at all! THANKS

    Hi everybody!
I had exactly the same problem!
The reason why it happens is that it's dust or dirt between the lenses.
Then the lens can't expand and gets stuck.
This is how you do: When the lens comes out you gently pull the lens outwards until it clicks. Then turn the camera of and on again and it's ok!
And remember theres nothing wrong with your cameras, it's only the lens that can't expand! =)
    Good Luck!

P.s. If it doesn't work, you should contact sony customers support!

    Best regards Megan J

OMG, I had the same problem, but it's an easy fix. While the lens is extracting outward, gently pull the the smaller lens away from the camera. It should click and refocus. Thanks everyone for the tip!!!!

  • billnn54 Sep 18, 2008

Since many people are having the same problem, with various successes in fixing it, it seems to me that Sony should provide everyone who has this problem with a new camera. I can't seem to make it work with any of the suggested fixes.

no it still keeps doing the same thing

I had the same "access" problem as everyone else - but here's the real way to permanently fix this problem when banging and smacking it barely works.

1 - Remove battery and memory stick. Back up the mem stick if necessary or paranoid.

2 - Using a small Phillips head screwdriver, remove all of the screws you see from the front (lens side), right and left sides of the camera. Then remove all three of the covers and place aside.
3 - Clean and remove all dirt & dust in and around front of camera, paying special attention to areas close the lens and lens housing areas.
4 - Insert battery and close the battery cover and then PLACE THE CAMERA RIGHT-SIDE UP ON A FLAT, NON-METALLIC SURFACE, MAKING SURE THAT YOU'RE NOT TOUCHING ANY OF THE EXPOSED CIRCUITS OR WIRING TO AVOID POTENTIAL SHOCK. This isn't a danger issue, more of a cover-my-*** related note. When I did this for my DSC-W55 I touched it just about everywhere without receiving generating anything close to a shock.
5 - Press the power button. If lens does open fully and you're still receiving the "access" message, continue powering off and on while using a toothpick or compressed air to remove remaining dirt and dust particles.
6 - When you're DSC-W55 is back in business - and after you've tested it multiple times via several on/off cycles, begin replacing the covers one at a time. The trick is to replace one cover, then to test the camera again via several on/off cycles. Do this until you've reattached all covers and camera is fully operational once again.
Tip - you may find success early by varying the tightness of the screws for each side's cover as you move along the on/off cycle process.

I had the same problem..tried a new battery and that didn't work. Recharging/de-charging etc and that didn't work. I finally applied just a slight bit of pressure (pushed back towards the body) to the lens when it was fully extracted. I then turned it off and on and wala! Not a conventional solution but it worked? I guess there is a flaw with the lens extraction when power is turned on/off? Anyway hope this helps.

Cheers! Merry Xmas

Turn camera power on, when access appears on screen and lens extends the first time immediately hold down power button until unit powers off. Turn power on again and enjoy your camera!

I "solved" the problem...
But I have to do this every time I use the camera...
I pull the lens when it came out, almost when it´s totally out...
And then it works perfectly...
But I have to do thie every time so... too bad...
Maybe I will try to pull out with more power with the lens open...

I experienced the problem again today - why does it always happen just as you need the camera the most!!! - but could not correct it with the solution shown earlier.
I found that it was corrected by gentle pressure on the lens sleeve whilst it was closed.
Let's see what happens next time!!!

Mine was doing the same thing. I tried to do everything that everyone said helped their camera when they had a problem. I got so mad because nothing was working, I just pushed the lens in an held them there and I kept my hand on there, and after I just banged it with my hands at the bottom where you insert the battery, and yay it worked (;

A friend of mine had the same problem with his camera so i went ahead and took a look at it. I guess theres a problem with the lens for this type of camera. I don't know if it was just his or all W-55 models but i did find a way to fix it. What you do is use your nail to grab on to the the shutter of the camera  and the side of the lens. You should be able to see the glass lens. When you turn on the camera the lens motor will start to move the lens at this point pull the lens out as much as you can. When it's out all the way you can do it, turn the camera off than back on again. If it does the same "access" thing again, just try it again. I did this and it worked.

try this!

1.turn on the unit and switch it to play mode( by pressing the button next to th viewfinder.
2. press the menu button
3. select setup (the option with the toolbox icon)
4. inside setup look and select for setup 1(toolbox icon with a number 1 at the bottom)
5. then select initialize and select OK to every ptompt,
