HP compaq NX9420 fails to boot up; complains about system disk and i tried to install Windowsxp but it switchess itself in the process of installation

Hello Dear,

If you tried to install the windows XP on a failure HDD then it will behave like this.
You need to check your HDD first, Go to your BIOS and run the HDD Self test.
If it successful then Just format your HDD before installation it should work.
If it failed then you need to replace your HDD.

My hard drive fails and it wont boot. What is the best solution to it?

If its a HP notebook then perform the har drive self test.
Here are the steps below.
Steps for HDD self test.

  1. If the notebook computer is running solely on battery power, plug the AC adapter into the notebook.
  2. Shut down the computer if it is running.
  3. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
  4. Press f10 when the HP/Compaq logo displays.
  5. After the BIOS Setup Utility displays, use the Right Arrow key to select the Diagnostics menu.
  6. Select HDD Self-Test options .
  7. Press enter to display a list of HDD/Self-Test options.
  8. Select Notebook Hard Drive and then press f10 to display an Estimated test time .
  9. Press f10 to continue. The Hard Drive Self Test executes a Quick test , a Comprehensive test, and a SMART test.

If the hard drive fails then surely there is no option other than replacing it....
Please surely buy HP Hard drive.

I cannot boot my system i had a problem that smart command

SMART Stands for Self Monitoring Analsys and Reporting Technology that can predict about a probable hardware disaster in the near future and it helps you to analyse the health status of your HDD. Once you run the command and if it fails it gives you the option F1 and F2. Try to continue by pressing F2.

This should work and take you further. If it doesnt work and returns the error... possibly your HDD is under Risk. Try to work on safe mode if it goes for a boot. But all these symptoms shows a criticality on HDD and this indicates that backup your HDD and get a new one restored with this data which is backed up.

You should also see if the HDD led is flickering and that can always be a positive sign that your HDD is getting read. But no confirmation on if the Disk is read successfully or it is damaged.

Good Luck.

I have a dell studio 1737 laptop i purchased in Feb of this year. my computer works for about 10-15 minutes then crashes completely. i went into safe mode and found that the consumer IR devices will not...

0F00:065D is a hard drive read test failure. the hard drive is failing. If purchased in Feb, the system should be under warranty call Dell Tech Support to get a replacement hard drive. (800-624-9896 in USA)
If out of warranty you can get a 2.5 in SATA HDD at Newegg.com for about $60

Boot into Setup and run the TOOLS / PRIMARY HDD TEST / SHORT TEST.

If it fails, try another HDD.

If OK, verify Boot Order is Floppy, CD-ROM, HDD. Exit Setup.

Print Table 1 Low Level Format instructions from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/106419

Boot with a DOS disk that contains Debug. Run the Table 1 script. Turn V5000 Off.

Boot with the HP Operating System CD. XP install should now proceed normally.

Good luck.

Wont boot into windows

Have you attempted to run in Safe mode?  Does it boot there.  If you boot to safemode and it locks on MUP.SYS most likely just the OS needs reinstalled.  Go in to CMOS (F10 on boot I think) and under tools there should be a hard drive test.

Hope this helps
