Is it giving you the red x icon? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1463

check to see if your ipod is under warranty https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do

If it is not under warranty, apple would charge you over $100 to fix it.

The red x means that the hard drivemy ipod keeps referring me to the apple web site - 2.gif is broken.

The hard drive can be fixed by resetting it by holding the menu and center button, and as soon as you see the apple logo appear on the screen hit it on the side on padded carpet or couch. make sure you hit it on its left side (left in reference to picture above) if it does not work the first time try again except a little harder.

(you are doing this because the arm inside the hard drive that reads the information from the hard drive is stuck in the middle of the drive, and and hitting it on its left side will get it unstuck)

The only thing that you could break normally when you hit the ipod2.gif on its side would be the hard drive and because that is not working you have nothing to loose.

If your getting the 1442 error code wile trying to restore your iPod than you may need to reinstall iTunes. Make sure that you update your iTunes to the most current version. The following URL will bring you to Apples iPod shuffle trouble shooting assistant. This site will provide you with a more descriptive trouble shooting process.

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/shuffle3gen/#

If your using the 1st or
2nd generation of the shuffle you can try the iPod reset utility located at the following web address.

Ipod will not turn on at all.

Best bet is to get it into a repair shop. We can certainly take a look. It sounds like it could be hard drive issue or, best case, one of the ribbon cables came unseated and simply need to be reseated. I am concerned due to the fact that it shows that icon AFTER charging it. Was it hooked to an ac charger or computer?

When turning on my iPod keeps saying to go to the Apple web site for support

To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including: ipodnano3.jpg ipodclassic.jpg icon_ipod_5g.gif ipodnano2.jpg ipodnano.jpg ipodphoto.gif ipodg4.gif ipodmini.gif
  • iPod nano (3rd generation)
  • iPod classic
  • iPod (5th generation)
  • iPod nano (2nd generation)
  • iPod nano
  • iPod with color display (iPod photo)
  • iPod (Click Wheel)
  • iPod mini
  • iPod mini (2nd generation)
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
