I find that the computer does work well most of the time but now and again it freezes .

Why do you need to change the BIOS. Upgrading the Bios is always a little scary and if the computer is working without issues, I'd leave the BIOS alone. The hardware protection is probably something on the motherboard that is stopping the bios upgrade.

Run the Bios upgrade from a floppy also make sure that you don't have a write protect enabled for the the bios. you could also boot from a hbcd disk and run it from xp mode and put the floppy in a then run the program. good luck./

Assuming the new processor is compatible with your MB there are several things to check. Do you have jumpers on your MB to identify different processors? Can you get to the BIOS with the new chip installed. There are several settings in there that could affect your boot process. Lastly, is your BIOS compatible with the new processor?

It looks like it will accept certain chips. Check this site and purchase one of the ones listed. As for the BIOS upgrade, the site also lists "since BIOS version xx", so just check your bios version (you should be able to hit pause/break key during the bios boot and see the version on that screen, instructions here), and if it's not xx or greater, go ahead and grab a bios update by clicking the "go" arrow on the CPU listing, it will take you to a download for the most recent bios. BIOS flashing is pretty dangerous, if you need help with that you can search online and find a bunch of tutorials, or just comment back and I can try to walk you through it.

hello velayojoel

my name is ausi.

if the asrock web site says 2gig is the max then that is it. the only other thing to check on their web site is the bios version. see what version is your bios and if a bios upgrade can help. otherwise the only thing to do is to replace the board if you want higher processor speed.

hope this has helped somehow.
good luck

did u upgrade ur BIOS firmware ?
if so it's gone corrupt...if u have the backup of the original firmware...then FLASH the BIOS with that...else u may have to change the BIOS chipset....but that may be a tricky issue as the chip is fixed in the motherboard....
Cardinal Rule 1
NEVER UPGRADE / NEVER MAKE ANY CHANGES TO UR FIRMWARE ON ANY HARDWARE.....THE HARDWARES ARE MFG TO AND FIRMWARES ARE INSTALLED TO WORK THE WAY THEY ARE MADE...99.99% of the people who made changes to the firmware on any of their hardwares....have always faced issues later with the hardware...

Rule 2,
Always take a backup of the original Firmware if u can else dont venture into this complicated issue...

OMG!! doogie812, quit giving people bad advice. From what you have suggested, you know nothing about computer hardware. You can upgrade the processor in this system and it will not effect the OS one bit, except make it process the data a little quicker. With this system, if you had done any research at all, it only comes with 1GB of memory, you should of suggested to this person to add more memory.

Upgrade from Pentium 3 to Pentium 4

what socket is the Pentium 3? Socket A. The sockets have to be compatible for example you can't upgrade a Dual Core for a Core 2 Duo because although the chipsets look the same the motherboard may not support the new instruction set. I had this problem recently as i wanted to upgrade my Intel Celeron D 3.02ghz to the Pentium Dual Core 1.8ghz and although the chips were identical and fitted perfectly in my mobo, the actual mobo i was using (foxconn) wouldnt work with it forcing me to buy an ASRock mobo and replace the entire system.

A8V-MXs are built for AMD processors. You will need a board made for Intel processors if you want to purchase the above processor. If you want to stick with Intel and Asus check out the P5 series of boards. If not, buy an AMD chip...I've had AMD in almost every one of my computers, laptops and desktops.

Good luck.
