Often you have to put the paper into the printer first and then adjust the control for it. Try that sequence. If it doesn't work here is the link to HP customer care. If you have another brand google the brand name and add customer care

Add Desired paper size

if this is a question at the pc then inspect the printer settings advanced and paper size. There are a number of preset paper sizes and there is also a 'custom' size that you can configure for the printer. Please remember that is you set a size that the printer cannot physically handle your printer driver will still try to do that size with unpredictable results

I have created a custom paper size 14' * 4' but i am unable to select the same paper size to set the page setup.

The maximum paper width the 6306 can print on is 13.6 inches, you will not be able to select a custom size form larger than the printer is capable of handling.Simply set the for size to 13.6 inches or the maximum width you will be printing.

HP Lazer 4300dtn keeps trying to print from tray 1. How can I set the default to tray 2?

Selecting which tray is used for printing

You can select how the printer pulls paper from the trays.

Understanding tray order

When the printer receives a print job, it selects the tray by trying to match the requested paper

type and size with what has been loaded in the trays. Using an "autoselect" process, it searches

all available trays for the paper that satisfies the request, starting with the bottom tray and ending

with the top tray (tray 1). The printer begins printing the job as soon as it finds the proper type/

size.

Note The "autoselect" process occurs only if no specific tray is requested for the job. If a specific tray

is requested, the job prints from the requested tray.

If paper is loaded in tray 1 and tray 1 is set TRAY 1 TYPE=ANY and TRAY 1 SIZE=ANY on the

Paper Handling menu, the printer will always pull paper from tray 1 first. See "Customizing

tray 1 operation" on page 47 for more information.

If the search fails, a message appears on the printer control panel display requesting that

you load the correct paper type/size. You can load that paper type/size, or you can override

the request by selecting a different type/size at the printer control panel.

If a tray runs out of paper during a print job, the printer automatically switches to any tray that

contains the same paper type/size.

The autoselect process changes somewhat if you customize tray 1 operation (as explained in

"Customizing tray 1 operation" on page 47) or set tray 1 for manual feed (as explained in
"Manually feeding paper from tray 1" on page 49). See if this works. Good luck !

Printing and picking the papers problem

HI there,
This issue occurs when the setting on the firmware of the machine does not match. Generally we use A4 / Plain paper, whereas the default setting on the firmware of the printer is Any size / Any type.
Hence if the printer is connected via USB, open the HP Toolbox and got to the paper handling section, set
Tray 1 = Any size / Any Type
Tray 2 = A4 / Plain

If the printer is connected via network, access the IP address of the printer and got to the settings tab > paper handling change the setting as shown above.

Let me know the next update.

Rgds,
Nikhil

Hp P4515n - Paper Handling for tray-2 only, gives

I just ran into this same issue with an HP LaserJet P4015n. Worked with HP and the resolution ended up being the following.
Hopefully this will work with the P4515n printer as well.

1. Open EWS page (printer page) in Internet Explorer.
2. Log into printer as administrator
2. Click on Settings tab, Configure device, System Setup
3. You will find Tray Behavior
4. Change tray 2 model to Standard Tray.

This should give you the standard options for the Tray 2 size or default to the size detected.

1. Press the OK button to bring you back.
2. Press the menu button repeatedly until paper size comes up
3. Use arrows to change paper size from automatic to whatever size you are looking for.
4. Start Copy

Light media setting for photosmart 4400

Before you continue with this project, you might want to check and see if the paper type is supported by your printer. An easy way to do this is to check the product specifications page for your product at HP.com

Product Specifications

Once you get to that page, scroll down until you get to the Paper-handling specifications section. Then review the paper tray and paper sizes information. If the paper you're using isn't on that list, then you are taking a risk of causing damage to your project and to the printer.

Word Settings for Printing Postcards

I found the fix!! Once you have your size settings typed into your page layout screen and applied to the document, click print. Once you select your printer, click on properties (or printer preferences) click on the features tab (the tab next to printing shortcuts) and go to the resizing options section. click on paper size bar and scroll down to custom. once in the screen, give the shortcut a name you'll recognize, type in your dimensions in the provided spaces click save. once you go back to the features screen, scroll back down to custom and select your shortcut that you just created and apply it to both the paper type and paper size. click ok and go back and click ok to print! Hope this makes sense..if not, go to HP's website and type in your product name, type paper mismatch in the keyword search bar and click ont the first link in the found section. It will give you the same step by step instructions....
