Re: xbox 360

First point is you need to extract the firmware from the old original (very important) drive which involves opening up the xbox 360. there are many guides online which show how to do this. Try and select tutorials where there are nice video tutorials which you can pause and do at your own pace on almost anything xbox 360 related. To explain this in full detail here would take an eternity and i find that video tutorials work best. I know that I'm sending you to another site but trust me that site is a goldmine of information and well put together too.

Should mention that within thisa firmware lies the dvd key if you follow the video tutorials and successfully extract the dvd key then i suggest you make many copies of this key called (orig.bin) if you lose it then your xbox 360 £200 odd pound machine becomes a very expensive dvd player.

Xbox 360 DVD Drive Not Reading Games Only DVD,CD after replacing the dvd rom

If you replaced the DVD-ROM drive yourself, some newer Xboxes do not recognize and/or function properly with older drives. I tried replacing a drive in an older Xbox with an older yet DVD-ROM drive, and it would not work. When replacing a DVD-ROM in an Xbox, it is advisable to use the same model drive, as the Xbox does strange things when you introduce different hardware. The url of a page is below that details the different drives that Xboxes use. See if your new drive is the same as the old one, and if not, that is almost certainly the issue.

Good Luck!

Xbox 360 will not read disc

You need to either clean the laser or replace the dvd-rom drive.
Both of these cases involve opening up the console and voiding any warranty Microsoft offer.
First you need to determine if its not reading a certain type of disc, or not reading any disc at all, if iys not reading any disc at all, it may have grime or dirt on the laser causing the problem.
You can clean the laser with a clean cue-tip or cotton swab, by opening the console, removing the dvd-rom drive and then opening the dvd-rom drive case to expose the laser.
If after cleaning the laser it still does not read discs, you need to replace the dvd-rom drive. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I have already determined that I need a new Xbox 360 dvd rom drive. The warranty on my 360 is already expired and I already opened the case. can I use any replacement Xbox 360 dvd rom or does it have to...

Yes this sounds like the lens unit has gone. You can replace the lens unit itself but not the whole DVD rom unit. This is because each Xbox console holds a special code that pertains to each DVD rom. So if you replace the whole drive you will find that the codes don't match and the Xbox will not allow you to use the drive.
There is however a little trick that you can use on the DVD drive. You have told me that you have already removed the drive from the Xbox itself so what you need to do is take apart the DVD drive, there should be 4 Philips screws on the underside of the drive. Remove the screws and take the top and bottom off to reveal the insides of the drive.
Look for a small white ribbon cable that leads from the lens unit to the PCB (printed circuit board) and disconnect the ribbon cable from the lens unit end NOT the PCB end and then you can take out just the lens unit.
The DVD drive is now ready for you to put in a new or used Xbox lens unit. Once you have your new lens unit just connect the ribbon cable, screw in the lens unit and put the drive back together. Pay particular attention to the connections to the Xbox motherboard making sure they are well seated when you reseat the drive itself. Before re-assembling the Xbox case and screws you can make sure the lens is reading by connecting all leads and power the console up. Pop a game in the drive and it should now read.

Good luck and please post back if there is anything else.

Xbox 360 wont read any of my games all of the sudden. stays in dash board. whats up

You may need to either clean the laser or replace the dvd rom loader, test this by using different types of discs, dvd , cd, etc. If some work and some dont, clean the laser with a cotten cue tip, otherwise you may need to replace the dvd rom. Please check the version of the dvd loader you have before putting in a new one. Good Luck.

When i load a game in my x box 360 it says reading then open tray close tray

the firmware in your xbox 360 is corrupt ,... you need to reflash your dvd rom drive in the 360 with new firmware,... id recommend using a new iXtreme firmware (ix1.6) so that you can play backups of your games too..

Installed new Xbox DVD ROM, but cannot read games

The DVD drives must match the motherboard that it came with. Unless you go through a very complicated re-flashing process. If the motherboard and DVD drive do not match, it will not play 360 games

Pick up in the DVD is bad or weak and will need replacing.
Or replace the whole DVD unit.

Make sure the disks are clean and not too scratched up
