Knocking noise coming from bottom of refrigerator

check the compressor for operation adn check the fan in the back of unit to make sure it is running...whirlpool units are notorious for compressor relay failure normally they click in and out every few minutes... if it is a knocking noise and continuous make sure compressor is not trying to start and sitting there shaking... normally it will stop after a few minutes and then start again....

Noticed the ice maker quit working a day or two later noticed things thawing in freezer. a day or two later i noticed the refreigator wasnt cooling. cleaned everthing out and tried to freeze some ice cube...

you need to plug it back in and see if the compressor is running on unit... listen to it for about ten minutes or so do you here any clicking sounds coming fronm the rear if so this will be a a bad relay on compressor or something to do with the compressor... if you remove back cover you will see the compressor on the bottom of the unit and can pit your hand on it to fill if it is running..while back there make sure the fan in the bottom is running next to compressor... if all that looks good the unit is probley going to work like a champ for a few days you recall any frost on the back wall of freezer back wall... if so then you may have a defrost problem either the heater has failed, the evaporator fan located behind the inside back wall cover has failed. a thermostat has failed or the actually defrost control... let it run and see if the inside fan is running also.. you will have to remove back wall to check the heater using a volt meter and set it on ohms to check the heater for continuity... repost with anymore questions...

Freezer is not freezing even on coldest temp.

Your symtoms are classic, either the compressor is bad or the compressor start device is bad. Depending on the model (whp uses many styles). Unplug the unit and access the compressor area. On the side of the compressor (usually the left) there will be a protrouding
box or a device that is secured with awire or plastic tie.
Without removing the wires, remove the box cover or device. Shake it...if it rattles it's bad. Leave unplugged get new device. Some are in one unit. Some are in 2 or 3 pieces. Without a model # can't tell. DO NOT BUY A
3n1 DEVICE. This catch all can and usually do cause compressor problems. These bandaids should only be used in an otherwised on the way out unit...just to get you by. They can excellerate any hidden weak issues.

My freezer is not freezig and the refrig is not getting cold. There is a notice coming from what I assume to be the compressor in the back of the refrig at the bottom.

Check Relay and overload on compressor terminal. sometimes due to faulty relay overload tripping which makes tik tik sound. before replacing relay need to start compressor directly.

The freezer has stopped working and now the fridge is warming up! Seems to be coming from the bottom of the unit - it makes a buzzing noise followed by a click, as if it is trying to fill something...

Is the compressor (underneath the refrigerator) not running?

If so, the buzzing sounds like the compressor is trying to come on, and it won't for some reason. That's major repairs.

buzzing noise is possibly the compressor tring to restart. It sounds as if the compressor is going into thermal overload. I would suggest the replacement of the compressor. Good Luck

Kenmore bottom freezer, make clicking and gergging sounds, the unit is 8 yrs old

The gergging Is probably normal sounds of the compressor equalizing pressure when it cuts off. The clicking, could be the compressor starter relay possibly going bad making the noise when the compressor comes back on.

My refrigerator has started making a great deal of noise.

The only part of the system that is still under warranty is the sealed system. The condenser fan, which is about the only thing that can sound like an airplane in the back of the unit, is only warranted for a year.
What often happens is there is a shroud around the fan that is made of cardboard. The cardboard warps over time, or has gotten wet or damaged in such a way that it comes into contact with the fan as it turns. You can usually get under there with a screwdriver or nut driver and loosen screws, then readjust the shroud so the fan will not hit it, then tighten the screws back down.
Now, sometimes the noise is coming from the compressor, but that whirring noise is usually hard to hear over the condenser fan noise. If it is the compressor, don't worry about it. It's not covered under warranty anyway, and that's just the way they sound sometimes. And the compressor is not serviceable anyway. But I doubt that is the problem.

It sounds as if you have a defective compressor start relay.  It is located on the side of the compressor, usually contained within a black plastic housing (box).  If ordered, it will most likely come with an overload proctector.  Change both parts.
