I'm a dumba$$ . . . I removed the reset/open power ribbon

Ok . . . as I said above, I have one of the older PS2s and it runs on a ribbon for the power and response for the reset and open buttons. Problem is, I have no idea the proper way to install it again, nor do I have the money for a repair guy. If anyone can shead some light . . . PLEASE DO SO!!!!!

Well, if the ribbon conductor is broken, cracked, or otherwise messed up, i dont think there is anything you can do. however, i think it runs (fold it along the old crease lines) under the disk drive and to the mainboard of the ps2.if you can find the ribbon connector that it hooked to, it *should* be a piece of cake as long as you fold it back the way it was folded. if you are still having trouble, update the question with specifics and i will do my best to help you.

My PS2 will play only some DVD movies fine. It does the same with PS2 games. Seems like they have removed something that the older, larger PS2s had that allowed them to read DVDs more deeply and play...

Hi there Mike,

The only possible reason for your problem, since your slimline ps2 is STILL reading them (but just a little slow sometimes), is because the lens could hardly read your discs due to dust build up. Try cleaning it using a disc cleaner and letting it spin for like 30 seconds. If this does not fix the issue, then you may have to MANUALLY clean the lens. Open the cover and once you see the lens, get a clean swab or qtip and damp it in an alcohol and gently wipe the lens in a circular manner. Then let it dry and try to play those discs again.

Please let me know how this goes. Thank you for using FixYa.

PS 2 new and old games keep freezing

It needs a new laser... it's a pretty common issue with older PS2s. The lasers simply eventually wear out after time. You can get a new laser for the older PS2s at the following website:

Original playstation 2- 8 years old- wont read discs.

It's a laser issue. 8 years is a long time to get out of your PS2! A lot of people's PS2s start failing within 2 or 3 years. The lasers are pretty unreliable on the PS2, especially if you use it as a DVD player. The following website sells lasers for the older PS2s and also performs repairs. However, it's a bit expensive. More than half of what you can buy a Slim PS2 for new.

I would strongly suggest, however, that you stay away from used or refurbished PS2s for the same reason! You have no idea how much life the laser has left. Either go with a brand new [not refurbished] laser in your PS2 or buy a brand new [not used, not refurbished] Playstation 2.

PS2 slim .serial number starting with No7 or less

That would be terrible, producing a video game that's not compatible with all models of a console. This is apparently not true, as all PS2s are designed to real dual-layer discs. Remember that many DVD movies are dual-layer, in fact. I think what's happening here is older PS2s are starting to become a little pickier and this dual-layer discs is proving an issue, not because of the game, but because the system is old and needs to be serviced. Here is the official explanation for your issue from the developer.

This may be caused by a faulty game disc, or problems with the PlayStation 2.
  • Check the disc for abrasions, scratches, and dust.
  • Ensure the PlayStation 2 is in a cool, well ventilated place.
  • Try the game on another PlayStation 2.
  • If necessary, take the game back to the point of purchase and exchange it for another disc.
  • If none of the above resolves the issue then this may indicate a problem with your Playstation 2 and you will need to contact Playstation Consumer/Technical support at (1-800-345-SONY).

Sounds like a defective unit. The dvd laser most likely burnt out. Call sony for technical support, but It is probably going to need to be fixed. It seems to be a big problem with the older ps2s, which they have supposedly corrected in recent PS2s.

    Hope this helps >.<

    PS2 power ribbon

    Hi Anishpp

If it came loose from the buttons, you need to remove the button holder to get to the connector. Push he ribbon into the slot on the back of the buttons.

If it came loose from the motherboard, you will have to remove the guts of the PS2 to see the connector under the cd drive right side. This is done by removing 4 screws. Two are on either side of your Controller ports. Another one is located between the fan and power block. Another is to the left of the powerblock. lift the guts from the back and pull the system out. looking at the right side, plug the reset Eject ribbon into the 2nd connector from the front. Then put it all back together carefully.

    Hi Sammy,

You have a connection problem in the Reset Eject circuit.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
    1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
    2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
    3. Remove all the screws.
    4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
    5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
    6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
    7. Check to be sure the ribbon cable coming from the reset/eject cable is fully inserted in the second connector from the front.
If this is not the case, you may want to check out . This could be a circuit problem and may need technical knowledge to gain repair.
