Most likely you have damaged the actual harddrive, the ticking sound is NOT A GOOD HARDDRIVE SOUND! Contact western digital and tell them that your NEW harddrive is making this sound out of the box DO NOT MENTION DROPPING IT. They should RMA it as long as you really did just buy it.

I bought a 320GB WD Ex HDD Passport Essential model WD3200ME-01 from Low Yatt Plaza a few days ago at RM234.00 . But it was a Product of Thailand. Does it ORI??Does this model authorized by WD US?
The shop owner said that there are 3 years warranty, but if have to send back to them not to WD itself? Why ha?? Almost all shops there selling the Product of Thailand, not originally manufactured by US, it is real WD or what? Please advice. TQ

Troubleshooting WD Passport 320 GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drives

If you plug your Western Digital Passport External USB 2.0 hard drive to a USB socket in your computer system, & the hard drive's light is on but there is no spinning sound, then you might be experiencing a defective interface circuitry.

These devices have a USB-to-SATA interface inside their enclosure. If you can find another enclosure with a similar interface (or buy a new enclosure), disassemble your hard disk enclosure, get the hard drive out & attach it to the interface in the other enclosure & see if it works.

Another possibility is that the interface could be fine, but the hard drive itself died. To test this possibility, try attaching the hard drive itself (after getting it out of its enclosure) directly to a PC. Since the hard drive is a SATA drive, you will be able to do this easily.

I plug my WD passport hard drive in my laptop but i can't find the files inside it. There's always a ticking sound everytime I plug it or unplug it. please help...

Hi,

I understand the you hear a ticking sound from the Hard disk.

I am sorry to say that it is not a good sign if you hear a ticking sound from the hard disk. It means the header is bad. I short the hard is crashed. At this point you may need to contact the manufacturer for a replacement if it is in warranty or had to purchase a new one.

Thanks and regards,

I have a 320gb WD hard disk and it was working normally but few days ago when i plug it, it could not work. ( the light is on but there is no spinning sound)

Seems to me a defective interface circuitry.

WD passport 320GB Can I use it as storage, not backup?

You can use it as storage if you would like. You can also delete files once they are put on the passport. When it is connected to the computer open my computer and it will be listed there. You can use it as storage by copying files into this way rather than syncing it. Syncing it could cause you to lose files.

WD Passport Drive Lights Up But Compu Does Not Find the Drive

Does your drive make any unusual sounds like any of these: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
If yes then you got a problem - it's something mechanical with the heads.
If it sounds normal or doesn't spin up at all - try to connect it to another computer and if still no go - remove the internal drive from enclosure and connect directly to PC via SATA port.

Hooking up the WD Passport to a USB enabled CD/DVD player possible?

hmmm...it may just be a capacity and interface issue, with the flash drive being more 'accessible' through the USB interface than the wd passport.

Big issue..is the WD on USB 2.0, and the CD/DVD on USB 1.0?
