Amp cuts off...

I got 2 12" L7 and a ZX1500 watt 2 ohm amp. Everything is wired correctly and work just fine as long as i dont turn tha radio too loud!! and thats because the amp i barely turned up!! i figured its cuz tha amp isnt getting enough power. Its only runnin off the front battery of the car. Do i need a second battery or maybe do i need a big capacitor?? how can i fix this so i can turn my amp up and really hear my L7's power???

Re: Amp cuts off...

Are the woofers single or dual voice coil?

How many ohms per coil?

If they are dual voice coil, are the coils for each speaker wired in series or parallel?

Are the speakers connected directly to the amp or are the speaker in series (one wire from each speaker connected to the amp?

Have you checked the DC voltage at the amp when you're playing it at high volume (where it cuts off)?

What should my setting be on car stereo...Keeps shutting off subs at half available volume.

If your amp is shutting off when you turn up the volume it means that it's clipping. This is very bad for both your subs and amp. The reason this happens is because your amp doesn't supply enough wattage for your subs and the capacitors are being drained of power causing your subs to cut out. As far as ohms this is not a setting. It is resistance and is very very important to have your ohm load correct or it can cause damage to your amp n subs. For a better understanding of ohm loads visit and put the number of subs and the ohm value and it will give you the wiring diagrams for the different ohm loads. then u need to look at your amp manual to see what ohm loads it is stable at.

Hello gonenutz14,

It depends on how you define the "best way". Driving each sub with a separate 750 watt amp will result in about 50 percent more power than having them share the output from a single 1000 watt amp. But with 2 amps, there's more wiring issues to contend with and the adjustments are more complex. The 2 750 watt amps will cost more than a single 1000. Plus if the 1000 watt amp is stable to 1 ohm, the power difference will actually be less than 50 percent because of the lower impedance. But if the 750 watt amps are also stable to 1 ohm and their outputs can be combined, we're back to 2 being better than 1.

I'd say that the simplest, most economical way is to use a single amp. If maximum power to the subs is the highest priority, and cost and wiring is not an issue, then 2 is better.

Hope this helps.

Speakers cut off when bass goes up

probably the amp going to safe or protect mode judging by the fact that you have 3 subs wired to it i would say it is not 1 ohm stable try disconnecting 1 sub and see if it still happens this will be running a 2 ohm load rather than 1 if it stops happening then you need to figure out a better wiring configuration that will work with your amp.

Hello smoot_dog,

Well, you did not specify whether you have the 2 ohm or the 4 ohm versions of the L7 and that will impact your choice of amps. But with 8 voice coils and 4 subs to work with, you certainly have lots or potential configurations.

If your subs are the 4-ohm version, I would recommend the Alpine MRP-M1000. Currently it is on sale at for $347.00. With this amp you'd wire the voice coils in parallel (2 ohms), wire each of the 2 pair of subs in series (4 ohms), and the resulting pairs parallel to the amp for a final load of 2 ohms.

If your subs are the 2-ohm version, I would recommend the Rockford-Fosgate Punch P1000-1bd which is stable at 1 ohm. Crutchfield sells it for $349.99. With the Punch and 2-ohm voice coils, you'd series the voice coils (4 ohms), parallel each pair of subs (2 ohms), and then parallel the resulting pairs to the amp for a final load of 1 ohm.

Either of these amps will provide an honest 250 watts RMS to each L7. They'll not only rock your vehicle, they'll rock the pavement.

I figured out the problem, the front right tweeter wire was pinched behind the mounting bracket. everything is now working perfectly.

2006 12" Kicker L7 4 ohm

first whats the range in terms of WATTS that your 12" sub can handle in 4 OHMS ? second , lets check the AMP , POWER ACOUSTIK 1800 WATTS , Now thats a lot of power to drive a single 12" sub speaker . your amp is 1800 watts , per channel is around 500 watts , if BRIDGE thats around 1600 watts rms for ONE channel , if your sub can handle that kind of wattage fine , but it will not blow the amp , what it does is shuts down , some kind of protection mode , it will come back on after a minute or so. I suggest to use one channel in stereo mode , or purchase another sub to use the other channel. i hope this helps AJ

your amp may be overheating, or you have it up too loud and the surge protector is shutting it of in fear of damage to your amp.

Rockford Fosgate 501bd question

that amp should work fine with those speakers, just make sure that they(speakers)are wired for 2 500-600watts coming from amp, you should be getting 250-300 watts per speaker, just dont crank your gain too high on the amp.

Amp Will Not Stop Overheating

You say you have 2 p312d2 subs. Ok so the d2 stands for dual 2homs (2 X 2homs voice coils per sub) , conecting in parallel the 2 voice coils of only one sub will create 1hom load to the amp, and if your amp is 2homs stable per chanel that means you are lowering too much your homs causing the overhwating to it.
