I have a JVC DR-MX1 DVD/HDD/VHS recorder which came up with the dreaded 'loading' error after 2 years of use. I have had it looked at by an approved JVC repairer who told me that the circuit board is fried and the unit is beyond economic repair. I have priceless camcorder footage on the 160gb hard disk of my children when they younger; the footage is of great sentimental value and I am desperate to retrieve it before discarding the unit. Is there any way I can download the footage to a PC or other medium? For instance, how would I connect the hard disk to my PC?
Well, i sympathize with your problem- it may be a bit expensive, but there are 'data recovery' services available on-line. if the data on the hd is still intact, then they can either 'burn' it to dvds, or transfer it to an external, usb hd. then, if your pc has a dvd burner, you can archive the content to dvds! store them in hard case holders-make copies and store them in a safe place! fire-resistant safe, safe deposit box, with a trusted relative or friend, in case the originals become damaged. also, use the external to archive any future pictures, or videos- then back them up on dvds! would suggest 500GB-1TB usb 2.0 external,if your pc can support it! $85-150. cheap!
might send the external along with the 180MB to whatever service you decide to go with, that will save some $$, in the long run. (or it should- research what the recovery services offer!).
good luck!

Thanks - I have a WD 640Gb external that I use to back up my other data. I will try to google a data recovery specialist and keep my fingers crossed that they will be cheap!
