I can not open the door on my Maytag top loading washer

Many new washer use a lid lock instead of a brake to keep people from reaching into the spinner before it stops. You probably have a
bad lid lock. Have a repair man open the top cover and repair or replace the lid lock.

Our machine will no longer spin .

IF YOUR MACHINE RUNS FINE UNTILL IT GETS TO THE SPIN CYCLE OPEN THE DOOR IF IT'S A TOP LOADER AND TAKE A SMALL SCREW DRIVER YOU WILL SE A HOLE WITH A SWITCH LIKE AREA PUSH DOWN ON THE SWITCH AND SEE IF THE DRUM STARTS TO TURN AND SPIN THIS IS A SAFTEY SWITCH SO THE LID HAS TO BE CLOSED FOR THE SPIN CYCLE TO START. IF IT'S A FRONT LOADER THERE ARE MORE SWITCHES AND SAFTEYS AND WOULD HAVE TO LOOK ON LINE FOR YOUR MODEL

It fills and agitates and then it sits (it won't continue)

If this is a Whirlpool TOP LOADER, check your lid switch. This is the most common cause of the problem you are experiencing. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, a wash tub that will not drain, and stopping right after the wash cycle and not advancing to rinse or spin cycles.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3557193-replacing_a_lid_switch

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because It does not have a lid strike and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator by bending it slightly.

A replacement lid switch (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The average price is about $20 - $30 if you perform the repair yourself. Prices differ between sites so shop and compare.

NOTE: You may only find your model number listed at the Sears website, but the part number can cross to all the other sites for cost comparison.

If you have questions, or if this is not a top loader, please post back with a MODEL NUMBER and let me know. This is a very simple repair that you can easily perform yourself. I hope this information is helpful.

I have a top loader and it will not spin.

Good day,
If it will fill normally, wash normally, and then just quit when trying to pump out and spin, then it would be a bad lid switch.
Be aware there are three locations for the screws holding the top console. Both bottom corners with the screws exposed. The same but the screws hidden by end caps that must be unclipped, and finally at the bottom rear of the console.
As well there are three different lid switch styles. Your parts house will sort that out for you if you have a complete model number.

How do i get the lid off to replace the lid switch

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured top loader, the following link explains step-by-step how to replace a lid switch:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385199-replacing_lid_switch_whirlpool_top

Once you have the exterior cabinet removed, the switch is held in by a couple of screws and a ground wire.

This is a very simple repair, but if you have questions along the way, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

sounds like the lid switch. if you have a hole that the lid finger goes in stick a pencil in it and turn it to spin if it spins replace lid switch finger not making contact. if you dont have a hole then try to tighten the screws on the side of the lid.

Will not drain or spin

The symptoms you are describing are usually caused by a bad lid switch. The washer will fill, agitate, but when it starts to go to the rinse cycle, the washer stops and will not advance any further. The lid switch is located on the right hand side of the wash tub opening on most top loader machines. Check to see if it has come loose. There are two screws holding it in place. Additionally, there should be a small plunger on the lid that pushes down on the switch to activate it when the lid is closed. Make sure this plunger is intact. If your washer does not have a lid switch mounted on the right hand side of the lid, it will be located on the left hand side in the rear under the console. A simple test is to open and close the lid and listen for a "clicking" noise. If you can't hear the contacts closing, your switch is probably bad. In the case of the rear mounted lid switch, there is an arm on the lid that activates the contacts. Sometimes the arm becomes bent and will not close the switch contacts. Generally, the repair is simple and a lid switch usually runs about $35. If you post back with your model number I can get an exact part number for you and give you step-by-step instructions on how to replace it. Let me know. I hope this helps you.
