Hello Michael,

Make sure your Network Adapter is properly working. Right click your My Computer and choose Manage; the Computer Management window will open. Click Device Manager from the left panel and expand the Network adapters on the right by clicking the "+" sign. It will show you your networking device. There could be a yellow exclamation point and it just needs to be updated. Right click it and choose update and follow the wizard. You should have with you your Dell's installation cd to update the driver. If, however, there is no yellow exclamation point, right click on it and click properties. Make sure it is enabled on the "Device usage field.

Now, if all is well and your internet cable is properly plugged in, go to Control Panel >> Network Connections. Right click your LAN connection and click Properties. One the General tab, click on the Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click Properties. Make sure it is set to obtain IP address and DNS automatically. Click OK. Right click your LAN connection again and choose Repair. Make sure the status is showing "connected".

If the above has been done to no avail, please let me know.

My computer required me to reinstall Windows Vista. I was then able to get on the PC in my stepsons profile but not under my profile as administrator. It won't accept my password. can you help?


You can remove or change the Windows User oradministrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access todownload the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot upthe laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. The two USB ports in the front of my Dell Slim 540S do not work


They may not be connected from the chassis to your motherboard. If your PC is under warranty, be wary about opening your case without Dell support on the phone or they will void your warranty if they find out. However the motherboard should be clearly labeled where the USB connections are.

Dell 540s wont turn on when i push the power button lightlights up then goes back off light on back then turns off fans start to turn on then goes off computer does not turn on.after this when you push...


generally a no post, since the system will not stay on, you simplify the system configuration by removing all external connections except power, then see if the system will stay on. If it does, add items back one at a time till you ID the issue.
If no change with external items disconnected, then issue is internal. remove any expansion cards and try again, if issue resolved, the add one at a time to isolate fault. If still no go, try ram modules individually. if still no go, disconnect power to all drives, see if system will stay running with drives disconnected. if still no go, then it is either the power supply or the motherboard. replace the power supply 1st since it is cheapest to replace

DVD/CD burner/player does not read, play or burn.


try this go to start-controll panel-system-hardware-device monitor and click the plus sighn by the cd/dvd if it is listed the dirve went bad if not 1 of 2 things will happen 1 right click and clock scan for hardware changes if it still dont reconize it than the drive is definitly bad you will need a new one.

Computer is on, moniter is on, but there is no picture.


Remove any USB devices such as mp3 players. If your computer is supplied with a wireless mouse & keyboard then leave the receiver in.

If it still doesnt work try it without the reciever. Or return it to the store where you brought it from
