Question about HP DeskJet 6988 Printer

Mechanism that reports closed door is broken, HP 6988. This is a plastic arm that engages the cartridge door and tells the printer that the door is closed.

    Hey cmolle, where were you 4 weks ago when I canned that 2 year old idea. I actually took the printer apart and know exactly what you are talking about. Too bad I was not smart enough to figure it out myself. Thanks. When my new HP Photosmart Plus breaks down in 3 weeks I will be sure to post my problem here. Cheers

There is a DYI fix for this that is simple to do.

Looking at the front of the printer, you will need to remove white panel in the RIGHT side. (Pull outward on the bottom of the panen and it should easily come off without damaging it.) This will reveal the small gears that are attached to the printer and the lid.

There is a small plastic piece sticking thru the side of the printer and is moved by the gears. When the printer lid is open, the plastic piece is allowed to move down towards the bottom of the printer. When the lid is closed, the plastic piece moves towards the top of the printer.

In the printer I just fixed, the plastic gear was partially broken and the part that should contact this plastic piece was missing.

The fix:

1. Use tape an tape the plastic piece to the top of the hole so it will always register the lid as being closed

2. Keep the side panel off and, when you close the lid, make sure the plastic piece is lifted and held in place by what remains of the gear.

This fix just saved my customer from having to discard over 10 ink jet cartridges - easily several hundred dollars.

While this fix is not supported by HP, it will allow you to continue to use the printer.

Unfortunately, HP does not sell parts for these or other low to mid end inkjet printers. Your options are:

1. Find a broken/scrapped printer and get the part or have a repair center do the same.
2. Call HP at 800-HP-INVENT and find out what the fixed repair charge for your unit is.
3. If it's less than a year old, call the number above and arrange for a warranty repair/replacement.
4. Replace the printer.

Sorry about the parts, my company is an authorized HP warranty service center and this is a consistent frustration for us as well.

It tells me the carriage door is open causing the printer not to operate. It says close door and press enter. We do that and it makes an attempt to operate then the same message repeat itself

Be sure to check the closing mechanism to see if it is working properly. There is a "switch" in the printer that is deactivated by a plastic tab on the carriage door. Check to make sure it isn't broken or mis-aligned.

Thanks for questioning, pl don't post shot cut questions,your inputs are more valuable for us to give straight away trouble shooting..>Check all cartridges are fully loaded?>Before any body attempted for trouble shoot?>Are you checked for supply status?> Are you performed color calibration?**** Do color calibration (go to menu,system set up,quality,color calibration,calibrate now)Take supply status print out(go to menu,scroll to reports,scroll to supply status, enter in to for print)check all colors are printed are not? If printer take print out from system or print demo page from printer menu.. check print quality...and color calibration..****Remove supplies.. observe while closing the door right side in the supply bank supply contacts engaging or not.(while closing the front door the 'bios voltage contact leavers' engages with the cartridge contacts for passing the voltage in to the cartridge for charging,see the attached snap shot)if these are broken,no contacts or not properly driving by the mechanism, results no print.. check for these contacts...*** alignment disturbed, its major issue users cannot perform this activity..submit in service center for this major issue.

10.92 errror message. I have install a new black cartridge but the message keep telling me to close the door. HELP PLEASE. THAQNKSw

10.92.XX says that the print cartridge XX(00=black, 01=cyan, 02=magenta, 03=yellow) is not engaged correctly.

Since the error occurred after replacing the black cartridge, it's a good bet that the black is bad.
Put the old black in the printer and see if the error goes away.
Open and close the front door slowly and look at the cartridges. You should see the cartridge flaps all open and close as you open and close the front door.
If the flaps don't all open and close, the cartridge lock mechanism could be broken.
You can run the DISABLE CARTRIDGE CHECK diagnostic. This will allow you to remove all the cartridges and install all or one in any slot you want. In your case remove them all and put the cyan in the black slot and see if the error goes away. If yes, put the black in any empty slot. If the error returns, the black is definitely bad.

Print cartridge shutters are not opening up when I close the (ETB)

There is a "link arm assembly" that attaches to the front pull down door.
It should be located on the right lower part of that door.
Open and close the door a few times and look for a two piece white plastic arm that has a pivot in the middle allowing it to bend like your elbow. Your part could be broken or if you are lucky the two pieces came apart at the pivot. You can snap them together if that's what happened in your case. Other wise you need a tech to replace the assembly.

Plastic piece in front of the cartidge prevent cartridge removal

Please have a look at this support tutorial. I think you will find that the plastic piece is the cartridge latch which holds the ink cartridges in place.

Hp 3600n getting error msg that cartridges not engaged

The problem is the locking arms on the right side of the machine are probably broken. HP has a tech bulletin out on this issue and they have a kit with updated parts to repair it. It is a very common problem.

Front door wont close properly

check the swing arms to see if they go up and down properly. They are behind the print cartridges and are attached to the plastic piece which stops the cartridges from falling inside the printer. make sure those are all guided and aligned correctly. Thirdly, if you are looking at the printer from the front, take off the side panel on your RIGHT (3 screws total--if im not mistaken) and look at the arm movement when you open and close the door. check the left side for the same movement. I've worked with a few hp 3500's and 36's, but im not a pro! just some suggestions.

The white roller is the hub that engages with the toner cartridge after it is installed. It is flush with the toner door open. As the door is closed the white arm attached to the toner door on the right side causes it to move inward. One possible scenario is that the tab on the door that it clips to is broken or the clips on the arm are damaged.
