Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

2 Answers

I have an XBOX 360 and it has the ring of the death I have bought a couple guides that tell you to disassemble and then wrap the edges of the board in foil, then take a heat gun and heat the center of both sides of the board. This sounds like a jacked up fix to me. Does anyone actually know exactly what solder comes loose to make it do this and how to fix it the right way? I work on computers all of the time and am very advanced on them and I wouldn't dream of taking a heat gun to an mb

Answer to your first question. looks like its a two fold problem, first Its the G.P.U.s B.G.A. it's 64/36 tin silver. Not a problem for the connections (Solder Bond ) but prolong hi temp operation will ever so slightly starts to warp the multi layered 3 ground plane P.C board . So as the P.C. board warps (Crowns) and the cool and contracts the bristle tin/silver connections having a differential coefficient of expansion will startl fatigue and break open.

The heat gun will turn it in to a Xxbox not to mention severely damage electrolytic caps exposed to temps over 250F . You can't regulate with any repeatability the time and temp envelope needed to re-flow the chips . Very risky at the least. And a salvageable unit will now become landfill.

The correct repair is to have the G.P.U. re-flowed ( with a RE-Flow machine) then just as important is to have the heatsink properley clamp to the G.P.U.

I have said to much. I hope that shed a little light on subject.

Hi,

Yes you should not do the heat gun fix the reason is that it only does the same sort of thing as the towel trick without frying the other components.

You should stop the motherboard from flexing and apply additional cooling you can do this yourself or send it in
