You will need a meter that reads capacitance or microferads.

the capacitor will have it's rating and range printed on the side.

For instance, if you have a 35 microferad capacitor, and it has a + or - 10% range, the capacitance reading would need to be between 31.5 and 38.5.

If the capacitor is leaking or swollen, then it is obviosly bad.

Make sure you disconnect the power first, then discharge the capacitor, (using a screw driver touch both terminals together.) and remove the wires from the terminals before testing with the meter or you will get false readings.

The car starts at times, but when it doesn"t it just makes a humming noise around the motor.

If this is a car, make/model/year. If it's a dryer, make and model will help.
Many AC motors have a "staring capacitor", which can go bad, as can the motor.

What capacitor should I order for my outside unit.

the starting capacitor was connected at the one line of the compressor motor then the value was label at the body of he capacitor, like 450v/ 5uf. to determined that the capacitor is totally worn out you will need a analog tester or a capacitance meter. usually if the starting capacitor get bad the motor doesn't run or hard to rotate.

Hi my 3/4 hp 230/115 centurian is buzzing and i smell burnt electrics.....what do i need to order to fix?

If the motor can be turned easily by hand then sometimes the starting or run capacitor can be replaced with the same value device and the pump will run. If a new capacitor is installed and it doesn't run then the motor needs to be replaced. If the motor does not turn easily then usually the bearings are bad and the motor needs to be replaced. I hope this helps. The burned smell is either overheated wiring in the motor or a bad capacitor, etc.

Outdoor fan dont start i give it help to starte them the motor start and run.? i think is a bad motor ? ( trane XL 13i ) thanks for help.

Yes could possibly be the fan motor, but before you change the motor, check the capacitor. It looks like a battery and is located in the electrical section of the unit. It may have one capacitor for both the fan and compressor. If the capacitor looks swollen or pregnant it is bad. If you have a ohm meter you can also check to see if the capacitor is open. Take the capacitor out of the unit after shutting off power. Note where the wires go before you take them off. Check across the capacitor with an ohm meter. (turned on to highest ohm setting) If the needle jumps up and then quickly back down, the capacitor is good. If the needle on the meter jumps up and stays up its shorted and needs replacing. If the needle doesn't move at all , the capacitor is open and needs replacing. NOTE : If the fan motor is whining when it is running, the bearings are worn and the motor will need replacing.

Our Hoover (3535d) dryer tumbler does not want to spin although you can hear the motor starting. The load does not appear to matter. There is no sign of belt slipping. Can the problem be due to the start...

If you hear the motor starting then it normally wouldn't be the start capacitor. It is when it doesn't start that you suspect the capacitor.

If your motor is turning and belt is NOT slipping then your drum should be turning! Those things do tell you that your electronic (control board and timer) are good, but you are wrong about either the motor or the belt!

The AC works but the blower fan doesn't

Hello, this could be a bad capacitor or the motor itself is bad. Try replacing the capacitor first.

I am replacing the a/c blower motor and capacitor. The old motor has 1 brown wire to the capacitor, 1 yellow wire to the capacitor (the yellow then loops from the capacitor over to the wiring panel), 1...

Motor Wiring
Old Motor
Brown wire is Start
Yellow wire is run or Power
Black wire is High Speed or Common
The other two taps are speed taps, but you have a single speed application
And high speed is what you need ,that’s why there’s not any wires
on Red and Blue if high speed was to much then you would move the
Black wire to one of the other taps RED low speed or Blue Medinm speed
New Motor
White goes to the Yellow wire from the capacitor
Black goes to the Black wire you took off of high speed on old motor
Of course both Brown wires go to the capacitor and Green to ground
If a capacitor doesn’t discharge it doesn’t mean it’s bad
but the capacitors don’t last as long as they used.
Any time you put in a new motor always replace the capacitor
It will save you a lot of time and grief later on.
