SOURCE: Lens stuck open will not retreat battery fully charged when it is turned on lens moves in and out but will not fully close

The problem you are describing is a problem with something in the lens assembly of the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $66.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

My Sony DSC-W230 turns on and lens keep opening and closing, and then it shows "turn power off and on again". how do i fix this ?

This sounds like a stuck lens. Here is a good blog about things to try to fix it:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
The blog is about a lens error, but when the camera lens opens and closes, there is often a problem with the lens.
Also make sure the battery is fully charged, and good. Also make sure the contacts are clean on the battery, and also inside the camera.
If all fails to get it working again, get an estimate on repair first, since the cost can justify just going ahead and buying a new camera.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

What is the battery life...if its not fuuly charged could it cause the zoom to malfunction

surely your cybershot tells you on the screen how much use you have remaining.battery life does reduce with age. The battery does not need to be fully charged to opeate the zoom function, but when it gets low, it will eventually not be able to move the lens at all. It is always a good idea to have at least one spare battery for a digital camera.Especially when most have memory cards that can hold far more shots than one battery power.

When I turn on the camera the screen is black but says 'Access' the lens then moves in and out unpredictably. Sometimes it tells me to turn off and on. This makes no difference.

Take the battery and memory card out of the camera for at least 5 minutes.Clean the gold contacts of the memory card by gentle rubbing with a clean soft cloth, holding the cloth between thumb and forefinger.Fully charge the battery. Then you SHOULD be able to start from setup again. If you cannot, you need a new battery.

Lens won't move stuck halfway out

looks like the lens assembly servo mechanism is malfunctioning.
try to push the lens in manually-push down gently until in and power the camera after. If that does not help you will probably need to change the lens assembly (it should be done by a proffessional)

Wobbly lens

Half mm or so movement is normal in fully extended lens. If camera is not giving any error display during function then every thing is just fine in it.

Hi, I also have one of these cameras which behaved very similarly. The fault cleared when I replaced my rechargeable batteries for new ones or when using new good qaulity branded batteries. When my rechargeable batteries became tired the output was not sufficient enough to fully open the lens. I hope this helps and your
