Delete your driver for said cd rom. Then go online and find the updated driver and re-install. Usually solves things like missing cd roms and cameras, etc.

I want to replace the dvd drive for acer aspire 5100-3357 with another internal dvd drive but I do't know the type or the model #, all I know is that is a super multi double layer and supports DVD +-...

A better not complicated solution is an external drive.
Like the:
LG GP08LU10 Optical MediaSlim External Super-Multi DVD Drive You might not know it from looking at this DVD drive's sleek, slim exterior, but it's loaded with capabilities. LG's external CD- and DVD-burner looks great, and works in four unique formats. Super-multi read-and-write lets you select your style for maximum performance, while the USB connection means there's no need for an AC adapter.

I have an acer aspire 5100 I want to use a USB 1 terabyte

Assuming it's xp or newer,it should just work. Now if this is an older version of windows,like '98,there's a limit on how big a drive can be. You may need to format & partition the drive using 3rd party software that should've comw with the drive.

Instead of trying to remove the internal drive, which is still useful, do what I did and buy an external DVD drive, just plug it in with a USB cable...then you still have your internal for nornal stuff and you can move the external around anywhere to take care of the heavy duty stuff...good luck..pls rate this solution.

--> i hope you have the xp cd with you
--> put the xp cd in the drive
--> restart the computer

--> in boot configure first drive should be your dvd drive

CD/DVD drive and external harddrives via USB not acessable

I once had a problem like this. It turn out that i just forgot to plug of my external drive. because of the lack of power of the device, it wasnt functioning properly. Try to see if you have two USB plugs, or one Usb plugs with a power cable.  Re check if both of the plugs are indeed connected properly.

Acer Aspire 5100 no longer "sees" its cd/dvd drive- anywhere.

You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)

If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

Acer 5100 lost dvd/cd drive

Is the DVD drive listed in device manager under CD/DVD drives at all? If so, remove it and reboot. Windows might be able to re-detect and reinstall the drivers for it, but odds are the drive is bad. You can try removing the drive from the computer, and use compressed air to blow out the area where it connects to the laptop. Also check the connection on the DVD drive to make sure there isn't any physical damage, bent pins, etc.

Hope this helps - remember to rate!

please to go to your bios setting and check under boot sequence whether your hard drive is the 1st device. try to reset the bios to its default settings and after resetting it try to check again on the boot sequence to make sure that your hard drive is the first option. if you have external devices connected to the computer remove all of it.
