Question about Scotsman Ice Maker 600LB CM3 30inW Commercial Cubed Machine

1 Answer

"bin full" (full of somethin')

The ice bin was empty, but my Scotsman would shut off saying "bin full". After buying a $300 controller on the manufacturer's advice (inevitably no help), I looked up into the underside of the ice maker and realized that the mechanism for detecting "bin fullness" is an infrared beam (like in a remote control) aimed across the bin to a receiver on the other side. The beam is obscured when ice cubes pile up and block it. This receiver was fouled with mineral **** and after having just cleaned it, it seems to work fine. The beam sender and reciever are located on either side of the narrow slot from where the ice dumps down into the bin. They can be felt with a hand at each end of the dump slot. Otherwise very dependable machine.

Thank you for following up with me. The machine works fine now. I should not have sent my message under the category of "similar problem" since I had already fixed it. My solution was simply to gently pull the sender and receiver units out, give them a good cleaning, and put them back in. Each unit looks like 2 LEDs attached to the end of a black plastic holder about 4" long. There were no screws to deal with. I just wiggled the plastic holders out, then back in. They are located (in the case of my machine) at the forward and rear ends of the narrow drop slot which leads into the ice holding bin below (as if to aim a beam across the length of the slot. A hand will have to be inserted an inch or two up into the drop slot to feel them along the wall of the slot.

Once full, ice melts and then doesn't start making ice again until bin is completely empty

There should be a temperature sensor (thermostat) close to the top of where the ice comes out of. This determines the height of the ice in the bin by controlling a call for cooling/making ice. This thermostat may be sticking, or is not sensitive enough to read the drop in temperature of the depletion of ice.

How do i get a service manual?

The bin sensor eyes need to be cleaned or replaced. First remove the front cover then remove the white plastic ice deflector shield. Now you should be looking at the evaporator plate look down you will see the water sump tray full of water in that tray is a black plastic grate that when the ice is harvested it drops and hits the tray keeping it from falling in sump tray PULL it OUT. now just behind the sump where the ice falls through opening on the left and right sides is where the ice full bin eyes are you can pull them out side ways there is plenty of wire so you can pull them up to where you can clean them with a soft cotton cloth with scotsman cleaner. Now for a manual goggle scotsman service manuals you can get a PDF file.

Remove and clean or replace the bin control sensors ( set of two ) part number 11-0540-21. Most of the time you can remove them and clean the little lights and this will do.

MV450 Scotsman Ice machine

1. bin full when bin is empty means that the bin control sensor is dirty or need to be replaced. But since your having problems with water over flowing also i would bet that your machine needs a good cleaning. is you water full light on or off? if off and water sump try is full then you need to pull water sensor out and clean or replace it. if water sensor light is on then you need to replace water inlet valve.

Yes, all ice machines have a means of automatic shut down when the bin is full. What is the model number of your machine and your bin?
