Sounds like you are refering to the encoder strip. It is a thin clear piece of plastic with little black lines all the way accross the length of it. The printer has a sensor on it that reads these lines so that the carriage assembly knows where it is inside the machine. It is usually spring loaded on one end of it. Both ends of the encoder strip have a notch on it. One side of the encoder strip hooks onto a fixed mount through one of the notches, the other side hooks onto a spring loaded mount. If your daughter didn't pull it all the way out of the machine it is a bit easier to reinstall because all you need is something skiny and long like a pair of needle nose pliers to reattatch it to both of the mounts. If it is all the way out the strip needs to be threaded back through the sensor on the back of the carriage assembly(the thing you intall the ink cartridges into). Hope that helps a bit. It is a simple problem for a tech to fix but could be more difficult if you are trying to do this without removing any of the covers.

The cartridges might not be moving back to there rest stop correctly, check the sponge to the far right Also The clear plastic strip running behind the carriage could be damaged or dirty. this strip tells the printer where the carriage is and if it can not read it, it will cause that message.
Hope this helps

Printer locking up. Print cartridge hanging up on left side creating error message

Check the thin plastic strip inside the printer. Take a soft cloth dampened with water and gently rub both sides of the strip back and forth. Move the carriage to clean the entire strip. It has real fine lines on it which are used to position the carriage. When ink or some other debris covers some of the lines, the carriage won't know where it is and it generates an error message. Be gentle when you clean the strip as it is delicate.

That is the ink guide. If the plastic strip connector (the slot cut on both sides) is not damaged/broken, the other metal tab may have fallen making the plastic strip to fall. It is usually soldered on the metal frame of your printer, find the missing tab and solder it back in. You should find a trace of the tab's original location.

Look inside behind where the carriage is, the plastic strip behind the carriage probably has an ink or grease spot right where you see the blurred letters. Wipe that strip carefully with a Q-tip moist with alcohol, and the blurs should go away...

My daughter pulled this long plastic strip out HP PSC 1210

Sounds like it is the guide strip that pushes/pulls the print carriage back and forth?

Sorry but it is not a repair easily carried out at home, if at all. If in one piece and not broken it might be re-introduced but the bottom line is you will most likely have to purchase new? Sorry. it might cost just as much if taken to a repairs?

Where is the encoder strip on brother fax machines?

I am familiar wih some inkjet models. The encoder strip would usually be behind the ink cartridge carriage. It is a thin clear plastic strip across the length of the carriage. The ink cartridge housing glides back and forth along the encoder strip.

Plastic strip fallen off from the ink slide

You are referring to the encoder strip. They can be reinstalled. They must be threaded through a sensor on the back of the carriage.

The mount at the left side has probably been pulled out of position. If the mount is not sitting properly the strip will be loose and will cause problems. The tension mount has two flanges that must be behind the plate it is mounted on. Good luck.

A thin strip came out of my hp psc 2210 all-in-1 (printer)

This is a tough one! It's called the ENCODER strip. The covers must come off. It goes in back of the ink cartridges.

It has to be threaded in betwwen the ink carrier and the carriage ribbon cable assembly, then hooked to the frame.
