Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a 6 year old desktop. After being on it a while the computer screen goes black and it shuts down. I can turn it off, then on, and it will start working again. This goes on several times a day. Yesterday, we took it apart, cleaned the fan and ran it without putting the side panel back on. It ran perfectly all day and night. Now it just shut down again.

I was finally able to read your reply. I did shut off the hibernation button.

How do you go about testing the power supply?

How do you unplug the CDROM drive and determine that's bad?

I have been searching for hours on ebay for a new power supply, but there are no matches for my model number.

Change power settings and disable hibernation mode:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options.

On pewer schemes, make sure, Never is chosen. This means the monitor, computer and hard drive will never go off.

Click on the hibernate button. Uncheck enable hibernation. Click apply.

Windows had a great concept but not so great of an implementation with the hibernation mode, especially for the compaq presarios. The compaqs have a hard time "coming out" of hibernation mode.

I would also run a test on the power supply and change it if it is six years old. Most pc's that come to my shop (compaq's) have a bat PSU (power supply unit). Better to change it now before it takes out other hardware such as motherboard, etc. You can find one, new, for a great price on eBay.

You can also try and unplug the cdrom drive and see if this makes a difference. When the CDrom goes out, it brings the whole computer down (the way you described).

Hope this helps!

You can go to your local electronics store and purchase a power tester for cheap. Or, take the power supply to a small computer repair and they will test, probably for free (the larger companies will charge you just to look at the computer).

To unplug the CDrom, unplug all power to your computer. Open the side of the computer. Make sure you are static protected by touching metal or the side of the computer case. Look up at the CDrom and unhook the power supply and the eide cable. Try the computer this way and see if it works. If it stays on, then the CDrom is bad. These go out silently and with no warning. Sometimes they will still read the disks but the hardware can be out regardless.

Power supply on eBay. better to look for the part number instead of just the computer model. Try this link.

Also, try moving the computer to a different location of the house. The power (wall plug) may be surging computers, especiall if it is being shared with something else.

My Imac crashes. 10.6.4, 2 GB ram, 2 GHz core duo. I've started with a clean install and disabled (one by one) all start up apps. Out of the clear blue, the screen will go black & I have to turn it...

When you say "screen goes black," does the computer power down, or is it still operating? Does the sleep light come on? Does it respond to the keyboard and mouse? (Example: press the power button momentarily, wait a few seconds for the "Do you really want to shut down" message to appear, even though you can't see it, then hit the return key to answer "OK," and see if it shuts down.) Does the screen go black or come out of black if you tap the computer?
While your computer is working, go to System Preferences / Desktop & Screen Saver, the Screen Saver tab, click Hot Corners, and set a corner of your screen to Put Display to Sleep. Then next time your screen goes black, mouse your way into that corner, pause a few seconds, then mouse back out and see if your screen returns.

IMAC SCREEN FREEZES OR GOES BLACK.

same thing happens to me - most of the time it will just randomly freeze; occasionally i get an unresponsive black screen. this 24' aluminum imac usually has startup problems also - sometimes it will "gong" and nothing else; sometimes the apple logo will come up and then nothing else; sometimes it will load the logo and then spin for a few seconds and then freeze - the only option is to manually shut down. there is no rhyme or reason to it

Screen goes black after 30 mins of working.

There are a few things you need to check here.
1. It could be that your computer power management is set to turn your monitor and harddrive off after 30 to 45 min.

If the computer is however working for 30 to 45 min while you doing stuff and it shuts off, the there is an internal problem "Hardware"

I would suggest you check to see if the power management is set to turn off monitor 30 min and harddrive after 45 min. IF that is not so, then we go on to the next test.

It could possibly be your processor fan is not working so once your processor gets over heated it shuts off the computer.

Turn off the computer, remove the case "this is only if you know what you are doing" with the case off, power on the computer and see if the processor fan is working.

You can get back to me and I can walk you through it.

Hope thiss help.

Sounds like the computer is shutting it down and the monitor is fine. Check for viruses then check your settings in device manager for the screen saver and power down (screen off) options.

Toshiba Satellite Goes completley off! Black screen, NO POWER!

This problem is likely caused by overheating. The CPU reaches a temp to high and shuts the system down. When you try to turn it on the system is still to hot and it will not let the computer power on. You can try blowing out the fans and heat sink with an air compressor or can of compressed air. If this does not help the problem you may need to have thermal compound reapplied. If that does not fix it it will need a new heatsink/fan/

Screen seems to be not working properly

try using a different monitor, borrow one if you have to, if the monitor works on your computer, then it simply means you need a new monitor. As far as the computer shutting down, it may be recording the bad monitor as an error in the loading process and automatically shutting down.

You should go to the BIOS and load the default settings. Also, check your device manager to check if all hardware is installed and functioning properly (no conflicts, etc).

Plasma tv screen goes black once you turn it on. Only sound

I have a panasonic TH-42PX60U plasma TV. When I watch TV programing I have no problems, or with the DVD input. But if I switch to another input, be it video game (PS2) or vcr the screen sometimes goes black and the red power lcd light next to the power switch flashes. Holding the power button in for a few seconds will shut down the tv. Then I can turn it back on and it may operate normally again for a undetermined period of time, before the screen goes black again. This never happened when new. The tv is about 1 year old. Any ideas on this problem? Thanks Ernie
