SOURCE: 2 month old ONKYO TX-SR706 speaker circuit problem

This is a problem with the surround sound processing. Effectively the digital signal is not being processed properly. Since this unit is so new, return it and request either an exchange or at least warranty service. The DSP board will likely be replaced.

SOURCE: How do I connect my outside speakers to play?

The onkyo should still have a speaker A/B selector in the menu.
Check on the back panel for speaker A/B.
If it has or you decide to use Zone 2 you will need to set the sound programme to "stereo" so the rears and centre do not work.
You can still use a digital source.
You should be able to display the amp's menu on the screen.
Hook up "monitor out" (Yellow) via RCA connector to one of the "A/V inputs" (yellow) on the tv, this will show you a display of the menu and will make it eaiser to navigate.

My onkyo ht-r590 goes on then shuts off right away.

The amp protection circuit has been activated. Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately. Disconnect all speaker cables and input sources, and leave the AV receiver with its power cord disconnected for 1 hour. After that, reconnect the power cord and reconnect an input and a pair of speaker wires onto the unit. If the receiver still does not turn on than you will have to bring it in for service. Turn up the volume and if the receiver doesn't shut down, power off the receiver and add another pair of speakers. Power up the unit again and turn up the volume. If it doesn't shut down, power off the unit again. Now connect all your input sources and turn on your receiver. If the unit shuts down again, your unit will need to be further serviced at an authorized Onkyo service center.

Speaker buttons don't function correctly

The Speaker A and Speaker B buttons select pairs of speakers. If you have connected a pair of speakers to the "SPEAKER A" terminals on the rear of your Onkyo receiver, you will hear stereo sound when the Speaker A button is pressed on the front panel. If, for some reason, you wanted to connect a second set of speakers in the same room or perhaps another room you would connect those speakers to the "SPEAKER B" terminals on the rear. Pressing both buttons on the front panel would send sound output to both sets of speakers

If you haven't done already, then verify that zone 2 works without the selector. If the speakers definitely work and the zone output definitely works then the speaker selector must be the culprit! It's pretty difficult to mess up the wiring with speakers, as even if polarity is reversed, you will still hear something.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the problem...

One speaker? Why would you have one speaker attached to A or B? A and B represent speaker pairs and are driven by the same two amps.

It's also not clear if you're saying the speaker is failing or the channel. You CAN swap them to find out.

Either way, the amps are common to both speaker pair connections so if only the B pair isn't working at worst you have a switch problem.

Individual speaker leads are not fused. It's possible the switch is defective. Does it light the speaker B indicator? If not, I'd suspect the switch.

If it DOES light the Speaker B indicator maybe there's an open circuit going to the Speaker B terminals. Or its common ground for that speaker pair alone is open.

I have an Onkyo A-7055 amd want to hook up two speakers. Looks like a dozen connectors in the back of the unit... which ones to use. If I experiment is there a chance I could blow out the unit?

Do you mean you want to connect 2 pairs of speakers, or just 2 speakers like you say in your question? There are 4 pairs of screws on the back of your amplifier on the upper right side of the rear panel near the fuse cap and the AC outlets. Each pair of screws will be connected to one speaker. Your Onkyo can be connected to 4 speakers. If you want to connect only 2 speakers, use the screws labeled "SPEAKER A" and connect the speakers to the left and right channels, and make sure you connect the + speaker wire to the screw with the red marking around it. Connect your other speakers the same way, one speaker per pair of screws.

I replaced an inline power fuse inside of my Onkyo reciever, power returned and now I have no output to main speakers and the unit flashes back and fourth between regular display and protect. ?????

THE GOAL HEAR IS TO DETERMINE IF THE INSTALLATION IS CAUSING YOUR PROTECTION FAULT OR IS IT THE RECEIVER ITSELF HAVING INTERNAL DAMAGE. REMOVE THE RCA INPUTS AND DISCONNECT THE SPEAKERS, THEN POWER THE AMPLIFIER UP WITH THIS NO INPUT, NO SPEAKER LOAD CONDITION. IF IT STILL GOES INTO PROTECTION, THEN THE RECEIVER WILL NEED TO BE SERVICED, AS YOU HAVE TOTALLY SIMULATED A BENCHED CONDITION THAT IS TOTALLY INDEPENDENT OF YOUR INSTALLATION. MOST TIMES, THE RECEIVE WILL GO INTO PROTECTION WHEN IT SEES AN EXCESSIVE LOAD WHEN TURNING UP THE VOLUME, WHICH IS USUALLY CAUSED BY TOO MANY SPEAKERS OR DAMAGED SPEAKERS, BUT IF NO SPEAKERS CONNECTED, THEN IT IS USUALLY BECAUSE THE RECEIVER SEES AN EXCESSIVE LOAD DUE TO ITS OUTPUT SECTION BEING DAMAGED. IN ANY CASE, ONCE REPAIRED, YOU MUST CHECK YOUR SPEAKERS FOR BURNED VOICE-COILS, WHICH WILL IMPOSE AN EXCESSIVE LOAD TO THE AMPLIFIER AND CAN CAUSE IT TO FAIL AGAIN. ALSO, BE CAREFUL ABOUT HOW MANY TIMES YOU KEEP TURNING IT ON OR OFF, AS AT LEAST ONE TIME, THE PROTECTION CIRCUIT DID NOT DETECT IT IN TIME AND THAT IS WHY THE FUSE BLEW. ALSO, DO NO REPLACE THE FUSE WITH A LARGER FUSE. YOU DO NOT WANT TO SEE THE POWER SUPPLY ALSO GET DAMAGED, AS THIS WILL DEFINITELY ADD TO THE COST OF THE REPAIR. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED FURTHER ASSISTANCE.....V

Amp protection circuit

disconnect all speaker leads at the unit, power it up then see if it'll stay on. if it does, reinstall one speaker lead at a time until it goes into protect mode. that speaker line will probably have a short in it. Just run a peice of skr wire straight from the unit to the sspeaker in doubt, hooks em up see what happens. if it shuts down have that skr ckd.if it works, just rip out the old shorted line and run new stuff.
