How do you know it's the DVD player? Could be the TV or anything in between them. Connect one video output directly to your TV and if it is happening frequently enough you should be able to narrow it down to the DVD or one of its outputs; or something else. BTW: model numbers are helpful in these discussions.
There should be a format button on your remote to change between widescreen & fullscreen as well as the zooms. May say format or aspect. If not on remote look through your menus. Make sure which ever u select u do not choose a zoom. This will cut of top & bottom of picture
I have a Philips 30 inch LCD and solved the problem by using the circular arrow button on the TV remote. Pointing it at the TV and clicking "right" (3 o'clock on the button), the picture moved right. Same thing on for "left". Worked for me.
