Question about Bose Wave Radio

Bose Wave Clock Radio

The screen is completely scrambled; on it are displayed all the features that it used to do. The off/on button doesn't work. The cleaning lady said she didn't drop it and doesn't know what happened to it. Help!

I had the same problem for a little while. Now the display is completely blank. My Bose Wave is an older unit, manufactured in 1998. I believe it is a Series I or Series II. Any assistance would be appreciated. I don't want to spend $125 sending it in to Bose for repair because I understand the problem is a relatively inexpensive component to replace.

I also had the exact same problem with an early Bose Clock Radio. It seem to fix itself the last few times by just leaving it plugged in, but this latest time when I had to unplug it, it's remained with all the function LEDs illuminated. Everything else is great and an electrician friend told me that the LED issue should be an easy fix but he happens to be in another state and the idea of shipping it out when a little jiggle on something on a board might fix it.

Considering all power is good, check for broken or fractured solder joints at interconnects between display and main PCB on BWR-I.
Check cold solder joints on U302 and U301(IC302, IC301).

Good Luck.

Any update on this? I just had the same thing happen the other night. It completely powered off, and then 2 days later I plugged it into a different outlet and it came up all jumbled. Was it a cold solder joint or cracked joint? There was no traumatic event to the unit.

Display not bright enough on Bose AWR1-1W clock radio

Yes...within a range. The display will automatically lighten and darken depending on the amount of light in the room. During the day or when there are bright lights in the room, the display will go to full brightness. When the lights go off or the room is otherwise darkened, the display will shift down to a lower brightness. You can make the "lower brightness" a bit brighter by holding down the CLOCK SET button and pressing the 'volume up' button.

The display is suddenly filled with information (sometimes unreadable). Everything has now stopped working.

From the sounds of it the microprocessor is scrambled, this can be caused by a power surge or thunderstorm, unplug unit, press and hold power button for 60 seconds in an attempt to clear the processor, if this fails this will be a job for a Bose factory trained technician.

Bose wave radio

Bose does not release their parts lists or schematics, effectively creating a monopoly for parts and repairs. In fact, their web site says that the Bose factory is the only option for service or repair. They used to list a flat rate repair charge on the web site, but removed it - probably because it scared too many people. Their troubleshooting guide (below) might help, but it's very simplistic.

Before you invest in expensive factory repair on one of these trouble prone sets, you might want to investigate the new HD radios -- better sound at a MUCH lower price.
