My DVD/CD-Rom Drive stopped working. Device

My DVD/CD-Rom Drive stopped working. Device manager shows the "yeild sign" warning on the device. I checked for updated drivers and it came back saying I had the current. I then tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No luck. Then I attached an external CD-Rom drive as I was going to use that but that won't work either. Shows the "yield sign" warning in device manager. Tried it in both the front and back USB Ports. I also put in a USB Storage device and that then shows up with a warning as well. Any suggestions/ideas? The PC is less then a year old. I am not a PC genius so responses in english would be helpful.

PS. The message in the device manager that I get is the following. I tried to update my driver but nothing happens:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Did you play around or update your motherboard chipset drivers ? If you still have the disc with motherboard drivers try uninstalling your motherboard chipset drivers and re-install them.

I can understand that my solution wasn't helpful to you you could have rated it that way but why the hell did you rate my solution as "off-topic" - it was 100% on topic to your problem, maybe not helpful to you but ON TOPIC, you **********

Please be careful when giving negative ratings there is a difference between not helpful and off-topic.

You might try pressing the Fn switch when you start up your computer. This will start diagnostic mode.

You might also boot up to Safe Mode by pressing F8 during start up. In safe mode you might try uninstalling your device and then boot up in normal start up mode.

You need to be sure you have a good virus program and check for viruses. If none of your external disks work this could be a virus. It sounds a little suspicious. If you want to check for viruses you could download a 30 day trial of any good anti-virus program and scan your computer. Viruses will cause this kind of problem if you have been on the internet without a firewall and anti-virus program.

I hope this helps.

Cd player not responding

Look for firmware at the manufacturer's website. Did you check in 'hardware' for problems? You can try reinstalling the driver there.
Right click on 'my computer' > properties > hardware > device manager > double click on your cdrom. Many third-party programs that control CD or DVD burning (as well as some player applications) install CD- or DVD-ROM filter device drivers into Windows. These filter drivers are meant to allow for low-level hooks into the hardware, to allow for functions such as packet writing (where a CD-R/W or DVD-/+RW can be written incrementally, like a hard disk).

These filter drivers sometimes have problems that can cause the CD or DVD drive to stop working correctly. The device entry for the CD or DVD drive in the Device Manager may show up with an error descriptor that reads "The device could not start." Additionally, there may be an error message that reads "One of the filter drivers for this device is invalid." The devices themselves do not show up in Explorer. Error codes for the device include code 31, code 32, code 19 or code 39, and sometimes the even more ominous warning "Your registry might be corrupted" appears.

Fixing the problem simply involves deleting the filter entries for the third-party device drivers. These entries can sometimes become damaged (which is what produces the "corrupt registry" warning).

To delete the offending keys, open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ***\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.

Several of the products made by Roxio are infamous for causing this problem, although in fairness to the company the most recent versions of their Roxio CD/DVD writing software (6.2 and higher) do not have these problems. Users of 5.0 or 6.0 editions of the Easy CD & DVD Creator product, which has been bundled with many new PCs in the past, should upgrade to 6.2 or better. Other programs can also cause this problem, with the same solution.

Note that after you do this, you may lose functionality in the program that uses the filter drivers, which may need to be reinstalled.Go to device manager:

When in device manager, look for:

IDE ATA ATA/ATAPI controllers

click on plus sign to expand the tree

right click on the IDE controller that is handling the CD/DVD drive in question

select uninstall

reboot your computer

I'm Cambodian customer for sony VGN SR25G. now I cannot see the CD Rom driver in window explorie please help me thanks in advance

Go to Device Manager. Uninstall the CDROM.

Vista:
Start>Control Panel>System Maintenance>Double-click on the Device Manager icon.

XP:
Start>Right-click on My Computer>Left-click on Properties>Left-click on the Hardware tab>Device Manager

In Device Manager left-click on the + sign next to - CD/DVD-ROM drives.
Right-click on the name of the CD/DVD drive.
Left-click on Uninstall.

Windows will come up with a warning,
"Warning you are about to uninstall this device."
It's okay. Click on OK.

Close all windows go back to the desktop screen.
Restart your computer.
After Windows loads you should see a pop-up out of the system tray,
"Found new hardware device"

There may be another one that follows,
"Found XXXXX CD/DVD drive"

You've just made Windows match up the driver/s for your CD/DVD drive.
If you cannot use the optical drive now, suspect the laser optical eye may be dirty.
Use a can of compressed air for computers, and clean the optical drive out the best you can.

[Computer has all power removed. Remove the AC adapter (Charger) and Battery. The optical drive tray is left open before turning the laptop off, and removing power]

Or use a device for cleaning the optical drive.

If it doesn't work past this point suspect a bad optical drive.
They are rated in hours of usage.

The yellow exclamation point in the device manager means there is a problem with the drive. It could something as simple as installing a driver for the drive or it could be that the drive is bad. Hope this helps & please rate my answer. Thanks.
